OBD - Diagnostic software

Postby richardtoulouse » Sun Jul 15, 2012 9:06 am

All,
I have an ELM 237 interface and use the software "scan tool" that does not include many functions. for example no misfire or lambda reading.

I am intersted by your experience on software tool and why not for the Jaguar diagnostic......
Were can I found it?

Thanks for your feedback,
Richard

Hi Richard,

I use Gendan's Engine Check Pro with my ELM.

The software doesn't read Jag specific codes, so it's not much use for the suspension, gearbox and that sort of thing, but it works well for the usual OBDII stuff.

It isn't that cheap, but it is good and did save me a heap of money whilst diagnosing the strange behaviour of my STR. If nothing else, it;s good for telling you what isn't wrong!

It is pretty good at handling missfire and lamda issues as you can log sensors over a journey and see exactly what is happening under various loads and driving conditions.

I'm pretty happy with it, overall. The thing I'm most happy about is that now when I plug mine in, I don't get any fault codes!

Hope this helps.

All the best.

I`ve just shelled out £10 on this programme. Will be interesting to see how it performs.

I`ll probably try it out on an old Dell Inspiron that I have kicking about with Windows 97 installed.

I`ve also found what I think is a usable OBD11/USB lead to hook it all up. At around £25 for the lot, it is worth a punt to see whether the set up works.

With J44 now reaching mid life, numerous problems are becoming apparent and I think the time has come to try to take some of the guess work out of the equation. Results in due course.

Worth a try Mike but when reading the blurb it does quote windows 2000 and above.

Not too much of a problem there, Doug. Another one of my laptops has Windows 7 Professional on it so hopefully there should be no problem.

This is what I`ve ordered for the OBD11/USB interface. I think that also comes with software although I intend to try the separately purchased programme as it seems to have more to offer.

I see, so you have bought two separate diagnostic systems, will you not then need another OBD to USB cable to connect the software only system (first link) to the laptop.

The original programme is software only and needs and interface cable to connect to the car.

The OBD11/USB plug and lead also comes with software but doesn`t seem to have the knobs and whistles that the other programme has. So, yes your are correct, Doug. Two software programmes and one OBD lead unit. Belt and braces, that`s me!

Actually it was this that I purchased rather than the item in my previous post.

I worked a litlle bit on my S type in order to trouble shooting it.

For memory, when I turn in right, the engine behavior is like a carburator one when the carburator tank is empty. When I stop tu turn, I need some few 100 meters in order to recover a normal situation.

You can trust on french guy to explain me that it's an english car...

I use an ELM interface and a french tool ("OBD facile" that means OBD easy).
I thought that the issue would be around the fuel pumps and more and more I do not confirm because at idle, I noted some "holes" in a midle of very stable rpm (the car is pretty yong with only 50 000kms).
The ECU does not report an error.
I measured the 4 O² data (and saw some break on regulation when I ear the hole) but I have no idea of what means the voltage value. I assume that the voltage range is from 0 to 1V and Assume that it reflect the lamba value (his range is from 0 to 1).
I need to spend (to found in fact) more time to confirm that the fuel pump are ok based on driving and turning on right and to measure the fuel pressure.

Fraser, I saw that you have a great experience on trouble shooting with OBD, do you have an idea of the conversion?
You tell us that you used the OBD in order to detect missfire, how do you do it? based on O² analysis or because the ECU detect and provide a report?

Thanks,
Richard

All,
I am back and I would like to point of view on my Lambda sensor mesurements from the OBD tool.
4 values have been collected. They are the 4 Lambda sensor data. The engine is cold, at iddle with some accel.
I am surprise to see the lambda at the output of the engine goes in oscillation between 0 and 1.
However, the catalysers are working well.
What do you think?[

First,
happy new year,
I am working to solve my strange issue on my S (I confirmed that the fuel pump is not the issue because the fuel pressure reported by the OBD is stable, including when the engine operation is not correct).

I need some help to find information about mode 06 reported by OBD.
They are some tests that are detailed, however some others that are "jaguar property".
They are typically tests with min and/or max criteria. They are identified by a TID (Test identification) and CID ( I can't found what it is). I am looking for the detail of the tests to allows me to try to found what is wrong.
I am looking for all the mode 06 tests and mainly by the following that are reported failed:
TID CID
53 7
54 0
56 0

Thanks for help,
Richard
