Car snobbery

Postby jBlackwell » Wed Aug 03, 2011 10:57 am

My brother is a proud owner of a 1999, 3.0 V6 S'Type. After having spent a considerable amount of time money and effort getting the car back to a good condition, the final piece being to fit the exhaust that sells in the JEC Tools and Spares for the 4.2 (a very simple fit for the 3.0 V6), he decided to join some friends to a car meet in Solihull. The place in question is the car meet which uses the "Black Boy Inn" overflow car park. Upon arriving in convoy with his friends cars, a gorgeous Porshe 911 Turbo and an older Alfa, the steward, stopped my brother and informed him he could not park his car with the others, as it was too new! After calming down and parking away from his friends a coke was bought and he entered the field to enjoy the sight of so many speacial cars. The same steward then waved through a X308, nothing wrong, a lovely car, I had the pleasure of owning one shortly. But this begs the question, why is there apparant car snobbery towards a certain car?? This obviously has nothingto do with the pub in question, but you have to ask, what was the steward thinking?? Surely the point of a car meet is for people, regardless to show off their pride and joy, owning cars is an emotional activity, regardless of what it is, so to me, an affront to my car, is an affront to me!!

Our Region recently experienced a similar attitude with a local "historic" car club. Nothing under 25 years old was welcome. So only two of our guys attended.

Soon after, a member of that so call "historic" car club turned up at one of our meetings and bemoaned the fact that we sent only two cars. He went on to berret us that we didn`t have more suitable cars in our Region and told us to get ourselves up to speed. The man then went on to tell us how to run our meetings. Needless to say, he was put straight on the fact that WE were not a "historic" tyupe organisation and that we existed to see the whole Jaguar picture rather than just single out cars over 25years of age. How we run our meetings was our affair and if he didn`t like it, he was welcome not to attend again.

So there you go. That is how some to the people in car clubs think.

I suppose we could be accused of nepnatism at our National events where we too fire off anything that is not a Jaguar into the nearest boggy field where our cars will not become infected by lesser makes.

The "Black Boy" is on my patch, I am surprised that you were shunted out into the normal carpark. Was you there last Tuesday evening (2/8/2011) as it was a great turn out which was blessed with the sun shining as well. I was in my Red TR8, but if you wish I am happy to meet up with you and your brother at next months meeting with my S type Sport where we may get them in together and show them off. Do you go to the "Moat" near to Alcester?

I will get my brother to get in touch. He did enjoy the turn out of cars, especially as he turned with with some of his friends cars. I will get him to get in touch and hopefully pop along again. Im not sure if he goes to the Mat at Alcester, but again I will get him to get in touch.
Thanks for the offer :)
