Any experiences of these, the ones with the Jag rear ends, not the Lincoln ones.
400hp STRs and 300hp 4.2 Sports seem to be amazing value, and don't seem to have the issues that the 4.0s had. Didn't like these cars when they came out, but the looks have grown on me, now that I'm middle aged. Not worried about fuel consumption, as the cars only get used at weekends.

Re: Jaguar S-Type 4.2 X200
The biggest issue with this model (and any other steel shelled car) will be that of body rot. Any vehicle built from steel needs VERY careful examination prior to purchase.
The S-type is prone to extensive sill and sub-frame mounting area rot. This can only be seen once the plastic outer sills are removed. Do not assume that visually just because the rest of the car looks supreme, that the under floor and sill area is in the same condition. Only by visual inspection of a vehicle by placing it on a garage ramp will allow full examination. Walk away from any rotten car unless you wish to become involved in a mega welding session. Only go for the best cars available. Age is taking its toll so buy the best you can and have some spare money in your wallet to deal with any repairs. Only buy the lowest mileage cars with a FULL and almost unbroken and full service history and check that the car is HPI clear.
4.2 models are the most reliable to go for and have all the bugs of the earlier 4litre model removed. Don`t neglect to oil service the gearbox every 6ok miles, if not sooner. Car history that does not show this action regularly should be reduced markedly in price. Reconditioned gear boxes cost around £3k!

Re X200
My car a 05 2.7d, has been off the road since March, simmering in my yard becoming one with nature. I concur completely with Mikes comments, my engine, although not a 4.2 which has as reported by the motoring press had most bugs ironed out of it, had little trouble other than EGR diaphragms rotting and a new gearbox at 82K, Jag engines are either good or bad it's luck really. But the common factor is the underside of the body and components in this area. My car has multiple coolant leaks from rusty, hose connection, pipes dotted around the engine compartment. I've replaced three and have a fourth to do including a plastic coolant inlet manifold on the side of the block which my local garage says the engine has to come out to do. Exhaust hangers rot off, I've had two go, the Undertray hangers rust away allowing it to drop, the underneath of these cars is a rust paradise. A thorough inspection before buying MUST be done.
