Distant Beeping Sound

I've recently bought an Aug 2003 S-type 3L (6-speed auto gearbox) with 136k miles on the clock. Throughly enjoying the car which runs very nicely.
Slight puzzle is that there's a muted "beep-beep-beep..." which is audible when the engine is at around 1,500 - 1,750 revs; it sounds rather like the noise a lorry or van makes when reversing, but much quieter.
Any suggestions as to possible reasons for this gratefully received!

The only thing I can think of is it might have something to do with your front parking assist if your car has this. If it has try unplugging the connectors to the front park assist unit and re-connecting.
I'm afraid I can't tell you where it is, as my car only has rear park assist and that unit is in the spare wheel well in the boot on the left hand side. Maybe the one for the front is in there too. Let us know how you get on.

Many thanks, Jeff - sorry not to reply sooner, but I thought that I'd get an email prompt to say someone had replied to the post.
I've certainly got rear parking assist but don't think I've got it at the front. It's that sort of noise, though (except a lot quieter) and only happens when the car is on the move. Everything works just fine - it's just this beep-beep-beep sound which is a bit irritating.
I was wondering whether it had anything to do with the automatic transmission; I'm not sure whether the gearbox oil has ever been replaced, so I'm going to get that done in September. Maybe that then might provide a few clues!
Again, thanks for your help,
Best wishes,
John
