I currently have a 1999 jag 3.0Se stype and pay £280 pa road tax.
If I keep the car the new Road tax rate goes down to £235. 1/4/2016. (engine size)
If I replace with a post March 2001 petrol S type then because of the emissions of 259g/km I will pay £1100 pa Road tax first year.
This seems rather unfair . It looks as though I shall keep my S type and run it into the
ground.
I am correct and any thoughts please.

Paul,
we bought a 2003 V6 3 Litre S Type SE and only paid £235, surely £1100 can't be right.

Re: New Road tax rates from 1st April 2016 S type
Paul, £1100 is the current rate in the first year for a NEW car. If you buy a post 2001 car, even though the emissions are 259gm/km, band K* applies provided it was registered before 23rd March 2006, therefore this year it would only attract £295 road tax.
My car is an X350 3.5 V8, (254 gm/km) and was registered on March 11th 2006 and therefore pays this amount. Registered just a few weeks later and it would have been £500 this year!

Yes my X350 is in the £500 bracket. Steep but there we are.

Thanks everyone for your reply's.
Yes it seems the new Road tax rates relate to new cars registered in 2016/17, even so very expensive and on a sliding scale before then.
I think the government are trying to kill the enjoyment of driving.

The Parkers calculator is quite handy for getting comparison figures:

Hardly a level playing field, is it?
Two examples of the same car but with the 06 model having VVT and seemingly the same emission output. Source was Parkers as in Pops post above.
XJ350R to 23/03/06. £290. 289-299 g/km.
XJR350R from 23/03/06. £505. 289 g/km.
What does this conclude? In my opinion, its just another way to get more money out of people regardless of emissions which in this case are shown to be a red herring.

My 04 XJR comes out at £270.38 if done as a one off DD payment. £540.75 if done on a 12 monthly drip. The once off paymernt makes a lot of sense.

It's all become one big mess and will change again next April when smaller new cars will suffer as well.
http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/road-tax/bu ... from-2017/
Although it seems if you buy a 2017 top of the range Jaguar in 2022 when it's 5 years old the ved will be only £140 (At todays rate)
The bit I doubt is 'From 2020-21 the government will spend all of the revenue raised from VED on the road network only'.

Best buy a German Mini assembled in Oxford from parts delivered from all over the world ,the odd nut or bolt comes from Britain assuming we can still manufacture them from British Steel, or get a Romanian Dacia made from parts supplied by Renault in France (looking after France), the VED is £20 per annum.
Alternatively get a pre 1973 (I think) Jag, free from VED, which has already used World resources and stop ruining the world environment and resources buying Electric cars.

Did the road fund licence go up in the budget, as I have been away for a while and can't find anything on the internet?

Yep, mostly a fiver again although the euro 4 / 5 engines seem to have remained same. Should be on the DVLA site now.Did the road fund licence go up in the budget, as I have been away for a while and can't find anything on the internet?
Jeff
Next year is the big one for new cars, 140 pounds for everyone BUT the first years tax for some can be as much as £1100 AND if car value over £40,000 then another hit of £310 PLUS the £140 for the subsequent five years ved !!
And that presumes no increase year on year too, apparently

Re: New Road tax rates from 1st April 2016 S type
Dead right, Mike, biggest con of the century, amazing how it's the CO2 that counts on the ved rate yet the mot checks the CO value !!!Hardly a level playing field, is it?

So the presumption is that it is a money raising system that does not have any basis on saving the planet!
Also euro 4 / 5 engines with lower tax rates are only so because they were registered correctly by the supplying dealers ...the very same engine in the same year can be double the tax rates because of this.
Getting a "new" secondhand vehicle get a hold of the v5c and / or check DVLA website for the emissions..don't rely on the year of registration for the rates.
