Wheel Nut Removal

How do i remove a wheel nut where the outer nut shaped cover appears to have seperated from what ever is underneath?

I`ve had this problem just the other day, Colin.

The clown who fitted my last pair of tyres used a hammer gun to tighten up the nuts whilst I went to pay.

When I came to remove a wheel a couple of months on, I found that the nut lever arm removal tool slipped on the chrome outer nut cap. The cap hex faces had been flattened by the use of the hammer gun.

My only option was to hammer a 19mm socket onto the nut and use a metre length of scaffolding tube to obtain enough force to slacken each nut off. Upon removal of the socket from the wheel, I found the chrome cap jammed into the socket. A drift then had to be used to remove what was left of the cap from the socket. Brutal work caused by a mindless idiot!

In some cases, the cap would come off the wheel nut, leaving the nut in place. An 18mm socket could then be used with the wrench and length of scaffold to slacken off the nut.

If you get stuck with this technique, a tyre depot may be able to help you. Be prepared to have to replace nuts and covers because they will almost certainly be damaged or will get damaged in this type of removal process.

It is not a nice or funny job.

An old thread but here we go again!

Locking wheel nut sockets on S-type, X350 and XF models. Utter rubbish. Always have been and always will be. As these tools get used over the years the risk of failure becomes ever higher.

My first MY2000 had the early type locking nuts and removal tool. That tool would shear off its internal lugs. So jaguar supplied and modified locking set made as an irregular socket with lugs mounted at irregular intervals. This is somewhat better than the original item.

The socket is of very thin wall construction and prone to just breaking. Any off set load in use or crass use of a hammer gun will speed up the usable life available from this miserable tool.

Guess what? Mine has broken after seven years use. This despite my being aware of potential failure. Sadly my tool was subject to abuse in 2009 when an idiot tyre fitter on the Isle of Wight used a hammer gun on the tool. I nearly tore the fools head off in anger!!!

Does anyone have one of these second generation sockets with the code letter "S" please?

I`m trawling ebay presently but have been unable to find an "S" socket despite there being a site selling these sockets which are available from around £25 upwards. I need to pursue this further.

My broken socket has been sent off to a sympathetic welder for possible repair. I just need that socket once more to remove all locking wheel nuts which will then be scrapped in favour of non locking nuts. I`ve had enough of this shoddy aspect of Jaguar engineering. OK the units were probably outsourced but surely Jaguar should have the decency to supply a half reasonable part in such a critical location?

Right now I`m steaming angry!

as one would be

but why do we use locking wheel nuts ?

i have replaced mine with standard ones for all the above reasons, and to be honest, i havent heard of anyone steeling a wheel from a car in many years , more likley to be the cat thats stolen these days

so weigh up the risk over ease of removal, and possibly replace those locking wheel nuts for nice standard ones

That is indeed the plan, Vince.

A replacement socket at around £25 - if I can source one, is more expensive than buying a locking wheel nut removal kit off ebay!!

Standard wheel nuts, cheap as chips. Good job too. Those chrome caps over the nuts flatten and crush due to the attentions of the tyre bay gorillas. Useful to have some of those in stock. Plenty around for the price of a couple of pints.

Just be careful that no one steals your wheel nuts to replace the four locking ones they have disposed of

FOR SALE.

4x 2nd generation locking wheel nuts. S key code. Sort that out for yourself!

How I hate Jag locking nuts.

Still narked because the issue is so unnecessary. Who did they give the design job to on this one? Can`t be a staff job as this stuff has come off the general market place.

NOTHING on this Earth inflames my passion more than jaguar wheel locking tools. Ah!!!!!!

I`ve had mine TIG welded up in order to remove my locking wheel nuts for the final time. Once done the nuts and the removal tool will take a well deserved final journey to the Council tip. Good bye for ever. Hooray!! So much for quality OE parts.

The lockers will be replaced with non locking standard nuts. Four for £9.49 delivered from ebay.

I`ve ordered two lots as I also have a couple of standard nuts which are showing signs of outer case flattening. Worth having a few in stock and also checking your removal tool for signs of cracking.

i don't suppose it all Jaguars fault

i bet the garage windy guns contributed a lot to the socket failing ,

but replacement is deffo the only way to go ,

and the wheels look better without an odd ' nut ' amongst them

The lock nuts are probably out of the universal parts bin.

As far as plain nuts are concerned, the same or similar can be seen on many different makes of car. Just a shame that these parts wern`t more carefully chosen.

Nuff said. Grumble over.
