Tyre inflation procedure

Postby TheColonel » Sun Aug 01, 2021 8:32 pm

I have recently bought an S type and find the tyre inflation procedure unusual. It needs the valve cap removed with a flat key then an inflator spindle screwed in before a normal footpump can be used. Is this a peculiar Jaguar / S type or alloy wheel fitment? Haven’t come across it before on any other make.

Hi Michael,

Certainly wasn't like that on my S Type, just regular valves. I wonder if at some stage someone has fitted non Jaguar wheels?

Andy,

Not sure if they are originals or not - I've attached a photo.

The procedure you describe for those wheels is correct. BBS 3 piece alloys I think they are.

Jimbo,
Thanks for the reply. This raises another question - if they are 3 piece rims does this cause problems in fitting new tyres? I'm aware of older Land-Rover wheels known as split - rims where undoing the middle set of bolts can potentially be fatal. Is a Thick Fit fitter going to be able to fit a new tyre or does the rim not need dismantling to fit a tyre?

No problems whatsoever Michael. Tyres are fitted in the same way as a conventional solid wheel. I had the Detroit BBS wheels on my XK8 and never encountered problems changing tyres.
