Alloy Wheel Repairers

Postby latebreaker » Sun May 19, 2013 11:46 am

Hi All,

I have a dreaded buckled alloy wheel after hitting a pothole last night. It's on my 9.5Jx19 Barcelona rear wheel.
These wheels are like hens teeth to source and I was wondering if any of you guys can recommmed a good alloy wheel repairer?

Here are some pics:

That is well buckled, Krish.

No doubt there will be someone that can unbuckle the damage. Probably best to Google as indeed I did when I had to have a cracked wheel repaired. I think I typed in something like "alloy wheel repairers portsmouth". That found me a local business locally and I was able to get the rim successfully sorted.

Perhaps worth contacting Eurojag to see if they have a second hand rim available.

Rob Jenner also has a tame wheel man who may be able to help. Perhaps give Rob a call or pm.

Most frustrating to sustain damage like this. I burst a tyre outside the Jaguar plant in Birmingham several years ago and successful recovered some of the cost of the damage costs. I sent images but even then Birmingham Highways ran around evasively for nine months before coughing up. The usual fight with such organisations who love to try to wriggle out of their responsibilities for maintenance.

Best of luck. Can`t see where you are based but if you post where you are, another member may be able to point you in the right direction.

Hi Mike,

Annoying indeed, as I normally doge the worst potholes, but this occurred at night and It appeared as though a man hole cover may have been missing because the thud it made nearly knuckled the fillings out of your mouth. I knew I was in trouble, just glad the tyre didn't burst.

I'm base in Warwickshire and I have indeed Googled local repairers. I've found a couple so hopefully can get it sorted. It sods law it was the rear wheel that got damaged and not the front because I can source front wheels around my area.

I shall contact Rob to see if be has any spare rims at all.

How much was your wheel repair if you don't mind me asking?

Thanks Mike

£50 fixed it. Still a slight flat spot on it but now no crack.

I managed to drop into a hole along side a manhole cover. Tarmac missing and unable to see the detail in the road as face towards low morning sun.

Low profile tyres certainly give little or no rim protection. My father always remarks that I tend to weave a car away from manhole type obstructions. Running a car on LP tyres does tend to make you look further down the road as some form of defence.

Here is what I fell into. Ribs sticking out of the manhole frame burst the tyre, fractionally distorted the rim and caused a crack to precipitate about a year later.

That looks like a similar pothole I hit aswell Mike.

I've left a message with Rob Jenner aswell.

Will take the car to my nearest wheel repairer to check if the NSF wheel has sustained any damage before going about replacing the tyre. I've barely done 6k on these tyres aswell. Don't you just love local councils.

Excellent photos which you should send (or better take) to your local Highway Authority with a claim. Expect a wriggle, but persevere and you should get a payout They have money set aside for that instead of repairing the road (apart from Sheffield who have begun resurfacing all their roads amazingly.)

Amey, on behalf of Brum Highways, deducted 20% from the cost of my repair bill after my incident. Very annoying as the burst tyre was nearly new. Had I progressed my case further, it would have cost me more in Court costs and hassle that I lost in not pursuing the matter further.

The crack which developed in my rim about a year later is typical of the nature of crack precipitation in aluminum alloy. A crack will take some time to develop. My claim was settled on a full and final basis prior to the crack being noticed. i therefore had to pay the £50 cost for that repair from my own pocket. The moral of the story is to check a damaged rim very carefully for secondary impact damage if you are unlucky enough to bash a rim.

Be prepared for a fight to obtain reimbursement. It will often be long and drawn out.

I'm not sure I've got the paiteance or extra funding required for a court case.

I've checked the front wheel and while I can't see no cracking or deformation my dad is certain the wheel is also deformed. I'll take both wheels to my local repairer and get his opinion. However I shall be purchasing a replacement front wheel to be on the safe side.
I'll be keeping eye out for rear wheel aswell, needle and haystack come to mind with that one.
