Guys,

If you ever need to replace your thermostat, water pump (Third generation, two part body, metal impeller, improved seal and bottom drain detail) together with the serpentine drive belt, here are the part numbers for easy reference.

Thermostat......AJ86484, 84 degree opening temperature.

Serpentine belt......XR830447*

Water pump with gasket.....AJ88912

These parts fit all V8 models. The pump is an upgrade for the plastic bladed early 4 litre cars factory fitted and equipped generation 1&2 units which prove unreliable in service. Mine just expired with drive spindle seal leaks at 75k miles. The later 3rd generation pumps as fitted to 4.2 cars are distinguishable at first glance by the two part body and two bolts on the front face which hold the two body parts together.

The pump is probably the first place to look if you have an early pump fitted. The leak off drilled hole in the drive extension body is at the 7 o`clock position and difficult to see without a mirror on a stick and can be found behind the back edge of the drive pulley. Any leakage will probably be seen as an orange fluid stain which will also be evident on the timing cover casing.

8mm socket and spanner general bolt sizes for pulley and five pump mount bolts. 3/8" drive ratchet handle needed to lever the belt tensioner to get a belt on and off. Other than that screw drivers and a small pipe grip to remove hose clamps.

Anti freeze is the orange type only.

Mike

Continuing a thread I opened a few years back, more on V8 water pumps.

Prices continue to tumble with many typical consumable items for many Jaguar parts sourced from the after market sector. Many are marked as being of OE quality and represent very good and realistic value for money.

Water pumps used to be an extortionate price. Here we are in 2014 and prices have never been cheaper largely due to the power of ebay. In this case a humble £33.99 including P&P on ebay. This pump is the later 4.2 spec with the two extra bolts on the front casing and the necessary metal impeller. The unit fits V8 S-type, XK8 and XJ8 models.

Are these a good unit made by a decent manufacturer? Well, all I can say is that I have a pump on my V8 made by this manufacturer (Circoli) and it has run without issue now since November 2011.

An update on water pumps at at November 2017 following the expiry of the link in the above post.

"Neville the Devil" at North East Jaguar Spares continues to sell OE quality engine driven coolant circulation pumps for 4.0 and 4.2 V8 Jaguar engines. This unit is as described in my previous posts above and continues to be the much modified and far more reliable component fitted OE at the factory to the 4.2 cars. I has the now essential metal water pump impeller and decent metal crush gasket. This up-rated pump is a vital retro fit if you have a 4.0 litre car and find it still fitted with the early unreliable plastic impeller component. Note the five bolt holes for fitting to the engine block, PLUS the distinguishing extra two bolts on the front cover which denote the up-rated, metal impeller component.

So here is the link to Neville Anderson`s site and his latest excellent deals on this vital V8 4.2 series part. I`ve just purchased a spare pump from him which I will fit once the XJR has covered 100k miles. That should be in about a years time. I buy parts before I need them and get a nice warm feeling knowing I have a spare sitting ready to hand on the shelf.

Can`t remember when I last used the stuff, Jeff!

The secret with these particular pumps and also throttle body gaskets is that crush gasket. They seal well but once used, MUST be replaced with a new one.
