Coolant leaks

I have an early 2.7 diesel, registered in September 2004, when I bought the car at 68000 miles and 3.5 years old I had a problem with an intermittant coolant leak. This turned out to be the pipe to the auxillary heater corroding through from the outside see pictures.

I was surprised to see the induction pipes were pristine aluminised steel yet the possibly more critical coolant pipes were merely painted and suffering.
May be a point to check if anyone has or is considering a diesel, or maybe the newer cars are better protected.
