Hi all. Can anyone show me where to look to repair the knocking on the front and rear suspension? "Every divot on the road I hear the clunking front and back I think but definitely front. It's an 2001 S Type 3 litre. Can anyone share images to help me know where to look please?
Kind regards, Sam.

Sam,

Go to the S-type suspension section on this site. I`ve a load of posts on the subject of repairing S-type and X350 suspensions. Most of my posts have images taken during overhaul.

"Click-clack" is usually the vertical links from lower wishbones to the anti-roll bar. Cut them off with a hack saw and replace with a new part. Not a difficult job.

"Bonk-thonk" is usually anti-roll bar bushes. The front replacement is fairly difficult due to limited space. You will need a long extension bar to undo the clamp bolts from above down the side of the radiator pack. Prepare for skinned knuckles. The rear ARB bush replacement requires lowering of the rear sub-frame using a couple of trolley jacks. Mark up sub-frame location with Tipex before you dismantle anything. That sub=frame MUST go back in EXACTLY the same place. Space is very tight as regards spanner swinging. Its not a nice job and I`d suggest a specialist Jag garage for that job. Have the car four wheel tracking checked after dropping the sub-frame. Otherwise you will find the car goes sideways down the road!

Peter Sellars had a suspension knock on his new Rolls Royce which he bought as a Christmas present for himself. He drove it arund on Christmas Eve but the problem persisted. Come 03.00am on Christmas Day and being unable to sleep due to the irritation, he rang Spike. Spike wasn`t amused at being woken in the middle of the night but eventually agreed to help diagnose the issue. Sellers went to collect Spike and issued him with a torch and a stick of chalk with the idea that Spike should mark on the boot carpet where the suspension knock appeared to come from. Spike got in the boot, Sellers closed the lid and proceeded at great speed to drive on and off pavements and curb stones to generate the knock. The police spotted the Rolls being driven in an erratic manner down the side streets of Chelsea and pulled Sellers over. Asking what he was doing, Sellars described the problem but the police were less than convinced about the explanation. Asking sellers to open the boot of the Rolls, Sellars complied. The police officers were taken aback when Spike frightened the living daylights out of them puuling a monsterous face and letting out a blood curdling scream! The two were taken to Chelsea Police Station for further questioning but were quickly released. Spike apparently went into one of his manic mad sessions and the police couldn`t take the strain. The Rolls had the issue fixed after the Christmas break.

This story must prove something but I don`t know quite what!!!!!
