Steering airbag removal

I need to remove the airbag on my 2001 (M21457) S type. There are several posts in other places that say remove two torx screws at the back of the steering wheel. Unfortunately there are 4 screws and I am unsure of which to undo. Some photos show 2 airbag screws deep set in the wheel and 2 less deep set. Mine all appear to be at the same depth. Again jag manuals say the screws are torx27 but all 4 on mine are torx20. Two of the screws on mine are close to the slopping edge of the wheel.

As with all air bag matters, disconnect the battery before doing any work,Bernie. You don`t want the thing going off in your face.

Regret i can`t advise on screw sizes or methodology.

Perhaps David Marks or XJK may be able to help you with precise details.

Hi Bernie
I removed my wheel a couple of years ago and posted on here. I'm sure I only removed two torque screws, and I had to grind down the shank of the bit to enable to get down to the head of the screw. However if you'r wheel is slightly different as long as you have disconnected the Positive battery lead as Mike says you can remove the screws with care. One thing that does spring to mind is has your wheel been changed from standard.

Hi Guys thanks for your replies. I have managed to remove the air bag and put it back. It appears that on early cars the airbag screws are accessed thru two holes in the side of the steering wheel. There are two round holes covered with pop out plugs and allowing access to two 8mm bolts. Undo these and the airbag can be lifted away.
Job took less than two minutes - easy when you know how. Bernie
