Faulty tank meter reading

The tank meter on my 2003 V6 S-type only show 50% when newly filled full. It slowly rises from there and after 30 minutes or so show the correct value. Can this be something else than caused by a faulty sender in the tank?

Good morning Arne.

This is the first time I have heard of this fault.

The fault could be the fuel tank sender or perhaps a faulty guage in the instrument pack.

My advice would be to have the car electronics tested with suitable test equipment. This is always the best route to find the problem.

I got the same thing on my STR 4.2. The symptom seems to be related to the way the digital signal from the fuel system computer is translated to an analogue signal at the gauge on the dash.

The cure which sorted me was to disconnect the battery for a few hours.

Often with some of these problems, a " hard dump" by battery disconnection is the most successful method of clearing out computor junk. Twenty minutes disconnection should be sufficient. The modules then reset after reconnection.

iam new to this forum i have a 55 stype 2.7 diesel it read 1/4 tank and i ran out of diesel any clue of problem does any one know of enginner in sittingboune kent been told by a garage to replace came belt £1.500 can any one help or sugest

Can't help with the fuel tank but runaway fast from a cam belt change costing £1500 quid.

There is an independent Jag specialist in Birmingham who charges about £450 and does it in a day with Jag parts. I got mine changed shortly before I sold the car on my 2.7 diesel sport and paid only £500 having negotiated with my local Jag dealer!!(using the above quote as my baseline)

Most dealer service managers are so desperate for work these days they should offer a deal on both the parts and labour - you don't ask you don't get and should be able to do much better than you have been quoted - unless you live in Mayfair...

Not sure where you are but it must be possible to find a locally known Jag specialist to one of the JEC efficionados who would do it a lot cheaper than £1500, would be worth paying the fuel to go somewhere else to save that much.
