Polishing

I've been hand polishing my STR and XJS using Autoglym's rather wonderful HD Wax. This has been so successful that my wife has requested I do the same with her car.

Now, polishing two magnificent lumps of Jaguar of an afternoon is fairly hard work, but doing an extra car would possibly tip me over the edge, so I was idly flicking through Amazon looking at electric polishers.

Does anyone on here have much experience with such devices? Which ones would you avoid, recommend etc?

Am I likely to burn blooming great big holes in my paint?

personally , i wont use one, even though i own one ......

i just cant get on with it, and it doesnt do what i want it to , and i end up hand polishing in the end anyway

save your money , and buy lots of high quality polish and some nice lint free cloths

Hi Fraser,
The subject of hand versus machine is very much down to personal choice. I, like BB, have spent many years hand polishing, however, I now use the Meguiars dual action polisher. I just wish now that I had one years ago.
If you do consider going down this road then check out the how to videos on utube and then do as I did and practice on the wifes car first before you take it anywhere near the big boys.
The advantage of doing this is twofold, 1 the wife is very happy at getting what looks like a shiny new car leading to a quieter life and 2, you get to hone your skills before giving your cats a shiny new coat.
This is purely my own personal opinion and one which is not intended to sway you one way or another.

I'm hoping to purchase Dual Action polisher next year and Im looking at the Meguair's option in particular.
For me I'd like the machine to do the work and looking at the online videos of it in action have as good as lead me to sign on the dotted line.

.....Merc. Club runs regular trips to Meguiars HQ which is somewhere in the midlands I think. You get a guided tour and product demos and they offer discounts on polishers and products in their on site shop.
I'm sure they would do the same for JEC Forum members should there be enough interest.

Hi Fraser,

My better half bought me a Woolies ( thats how old it is) cheap polisher over ten years ago and it is still going strong; my advice for what its worth is it is the quality of the pads and mitts not the electric polisher itself that makes the difference. If I needed to buy another i would buy the cheapest "tool" but invest in good quality stuff from Meguairs that actually come into contact with the body work. I had to replace the polishing pads that it came with fairly quickly as they soon wore out, but replacements are available on ebay or from the brands like Meguairs.

Personally i love it for doing the every day cars, it makes a chore really easy - and the areas it cannot cope with are easily finished off by hand.

This reminds me of a time many years ago when my dad put a buffing pad on his Black and Decker attachment to make the polishing easier. After about half an hour of buffing the pad flew off and the sanding disc that he forgot to take off put a lovely coach line down the rear passenger door! Funny now but not at the time.

Now that the six year life of the Pureguard application I had done when I bought my car has now come to an end, I want to give the car a good polish. Which one is the best for ease of application and longevity.
