S Type - Hissing with Climate on

With the Climate switched on I am getting a hissing sound in the front passenger footwell. Turn climate off and hissing goes. Note of hissing changes with revs. Any ideas?

I`ve not heard of this foot well sound effect before!

However, a similar sound is often heard from a V6 engined car in the rear near bulkhead area with the bonnet open if two small air pipes are defective.

There are two small rubber air pipe joint elbows that can collapse, split or crush with age. They can only be accessed by removal of the inlet manifold. This has to occur to change the spark plugs and it is recommended that these two pipes be changed at spark plug service intervals.

New inlet manifold gaskets would also be required to complete the job. I have made brief mention of this in the latest magazine (Jan 2012), second paragraph of my spark plug change article on our Forum pages. I`ll take a stab or wild guess at this stage that this might be the noise you are hearing.

That is the only thing I can think of that would cause such a noise.

Anyone else have any other ideas?

Sounds like it could be the refrigerant/gas is low in the system and what you are hearing is the noise made by the half empty pipes.

The climate will now not blow cold air so looks as though Doug is correct. The hissing has stopped so assume all the refrigerant/gas has gone. Still under warranty so off the the dealer.

Refrigerant/gas had leaked out through leak in condenser. All sorted under warranty new condensor fitted and turbo pipe by Sturgess Leicester.
