Replacing discs

Hi there,

I need to replace all 4 discs on my 2004 2.5 S type, but am confused how to deal with the electric handbrake |(park brake). Any ideas?

Hi Sal,

With the ignition switch "on", depress the handbrake sitch and hold down whilst switching the ignition switch to the "off" position. That will keep the hand brake off whilst you attend to your brake relining.

You will need it to retract the rear pistons when you have it all in pieces. Lubricate the pistons with brake fluid prior to retraction attempts. Note that the pistons may initially stick before they begin to turn. As I remember one side of the car has a piston that retracts by being turned clockwise. Can`t remember which it was. You will find the tool I suggest buying operates only in one direction. This is not a problem. If you remove the reaction plate from the tool, locate the T bar unit in the detents in the piston and push down on it, you will find that after overcoming the initial stickiness you can wind the piston back into the calliper without too much trouble.

Use copper grease on all brake pad backings and calliper running surfaces.

Settle the bakes in gently and take the car for a run. Check the temperature of the centre of the alloy wheels to ensure that the rear brakes are not dragging and getting hot. To leave in that condition will burn the brakes out early and may lead to oil seal failure due to hot running conditions.

Tracing back through your link, I found a photo of the brake retraction tool, which I can get from Halfords.
I think I can get going now.
