Disc Upgrades

I have seen cross drilled and grooved discs fitted on the XKR - do they offer appreciable more stopping power and can they be fitted to the 2004 -2007 4.2Ltr S Type R ?

I guess that the XKR had the optional Brembo brakes. It is possible but expensive to retro-fit and to my opinion not worth it. I have a 2003 My S-type 3,0 and I have upgraded the brakes with new pads from EBC. They are called "Red Stuff" and are really superb. Better pedal feel and almost no brake dust on the wheels. EBC also offer grooved discs. I have them on my XK8 but I find them a bit noisy so my choice is to stick to original Jaguar discs with EBC Red Stuff pads/ Arne

I run Red Stuff on standard discs on my 4 litre S. It does for every day driving quite nicely. Little or no brake dust mess and a better pedal feel. Discs have a nice polished surface and not the usual ground down look that is predominant with standard pad material.

I understand from the man who used to maintain my car that Red Stuff reduces disc warping and wear down significantly. I`ve no reason to doubt this. More than happy.

The S-type R may be a different matter. The car is a road going rocket and tends to be used like one. The best materials and parts need to be used with economy a secondary consideration. EBC who manufacture uprated materials and parts will be able to supply the correct combination of uprate materials and their advice would be worth consideration before installing a new set up.

I like the EBC equipment but unless you are going to go racing, huge uprates are probably a bit of a waste of time for normal driving. Decent pad material excepted, that is probably as far as you need to go.

I have used crossed drilled / grooved Rossini; Tarox and Black Diamond discs on my old 4 ltr S Type over the years. They all offered improved performance when compared to the original but the Tarox lasted longest and offered the best resistance to warping. Likewise I've used EBC greenstuff and redstuff and Black Diamond "preditor" pads

I used to get about 10,000 miles out of a set of pads and 20,000 from the discs (Tarox discs lasted 35,000 miles).

None of the above companies offer discs off the shelf for my Brembo equipped S Type R - I just assumed that the similarly equipped XKR had the same larger diameter discs as my car and wondered if anyone had tried them.....
