As I am sure you now realise Mike, I fear greatly for what remains of any sanity I may have once possessed. I had a real eureka moment.........and looked at the bill from the repair shop!! It states.... 'RNS driveshaft reluctor wheel damaged (showing ABS fault). Fit s/h driveshaft and sensor, clear fault codes etc'. I guess from the similarity of words used.... this is what you thought all along. As you can tell, for someone with such a limited mechanical knowledge as myself this basically translated as I indicated in my earlier post. Sorry for any confusion.....and thanks again for taking an interest.
I came into this world with nothing....and I've still got most of it!!

The primary reason for model Forum existence, Clive, is to help clear some of the technical fog for members.
We all have knowledge but in different fields and these JEC Boards are here and are available for queries such as yours to be debated and answers found for the benefit of all. It is obviously our pleasure to help a fellow member understand his car more fully. I`m glad you got the car sorted.
Here is an image of a reluctor ring. They often split across the part that has the smallest cross sectional area. Imagine if you will, this ring slipped onto a short, round joint unit with a two and a half foot long shaft sticking out of that.
Unfortunately if the ring breaks, then that together with the joint has to be replaced as a single unit. If a new unit is fitted, the drive shaft can usually be re used. In the case of a second hand unit, that would often be supplied complete with a shaft as it would not be cost effective for a seller to split the two items. In the case of failure of ring or joint, fitting second hand is an excellent idea saving money and to an extent labour charges.
Glad to see the story has a happy ending.

Glad you got it sorted clive. I do enjoy reading your post's as you allways inject a bit of humour to them. A great result all round.

Re: Park Brake
Interestingly, reluctor rings are available for the X-type but as far as I can tell, not for the S-type. Indeed a shame.
Apparently it is corrosion on the physical interface between the reluctor and the drive joint which causes the majority of failures.
When corrosion occurs, an expansion of the material occurs and pressure builds up between the joint outer case and the reluctor. Eventually something has to give, and in this case the reluctor will crack at a weak pont and maybe even fall off the joint. Hence the ABS light coming on as a sensor signal is then no longer present.

Re: Park Brake
Hi all, Thanks for your interest and help. You will no doubt be pleased to know Mike that some of the technical stuff does get taken on board and as you point out, helps idiots like me to understand the dark arts that are practiced under the bonnet and the other bits I cannot see from the end of my chamois. At present all is well with the braking system as far as I can tell. Well it seems to stop when I want it to anyway. Off up to Kent this weekend (550 miles round trip) again, so no doubt something will get sparked off and misbehave!!

Re: Park Brake
Hi all, Just a quickie (so to speak) - since last post and trip to Kent etc (1000 miles in the week) have had the dreaded lurgi. My own fault for going back to the south east and the midlands again!! Last couple of weeks been very diffcult with the weather etc - went into local B&Q today to buy some wood but apparently soime bloke called Noah had already bought it all for his boat building project. Probably will regret posting this inf - but - the car has been great. No troubles at all over the journeys and has reminded me why I liked it so much in the first place. MPG at steady 75-80 mph (with cruice control on) in mid to high 30's. Great motor for long distance driving. Hope to be at Weston Park later this month and hopefully make a few personal greetings! Have bought some 50 gall drums, 6 ex BT telephone poles and a couple of washing lines in case it becomes neccessary to construct temporary kontiki raft to float up to Salop with. (Always carry a swiss army knife). Sad, is'nt it?
Re: Park Brake
Now you know why I carry an outboard motor, an inflatable dinghy, a pack of distress flares and a couple of thunder flashes in the boot of J44. The flashes are also useful for my second hobby. Namely unblocking drains. Any problems with that sort of issue, I may also be able to help. Just ask.
Glad your car is now doing well, Clive.
