2002 S Type R Caliper Repair Help

Postby Flappers » Thu Jun 29, 2023 11:43 am

Hi can anyone suggest a repair kit please. I've pushed a seized piston in and now have huge shudder at hi speed. Braking is dangerous at anything over 30. So I'm thinking I'll need to get it off and replace the warped discs plus fix the caliper. Never done this before so any advice will be greatly appreciated :)
Kind regards, Sam.

That's out of my comfort zone as DIY project, sorry!

Does the STR have Brembo barkes? If so, then I'm in the middle of a similar job for similiar reasons on my X350.
I bought a seal kit off eBay: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/330927717049
It may be the same if you have the same calipers.
One diffeculty you face is getting the siezed piston out. You might want to try and jam the other three in place and shift it with compressed air - but be careful.

It does yes, I've ordered them thank you! How would I do it with compressed air please? And I'm wondering if I put a lump of wood between the disk and working piston and a thinner bit wood infront of the disc and stuck piston and pump the brakes hard? Failing that I dismantle it and replace the rubbers I guess but I can't find a video on how to do that... I did get it to go back into the housing with a persuader bar but it's not moving now. I'm okay if I just potter about, it doesn't shudder at low speed. It's scary at speed though, needs doing :?

I think what you suggest should work but you will get brake fluid shooting out under high pressure.
I suggest compressed air as I assume you will remove the caliper from the car to replace the seals. I am assuming you have an air compressor. The key is to get the stuck piston out before any of the others, otherwise it will become a problem. Hopefully the other ones will come out fairly easily. One other thing you can do with these calipers is to remove the link pipe at the bottom, then you can blow air in through one or other of those holes.
