New battery time - any recommendations

Postby National2188 » Mon Sep 28, 2015 12:48 pm

Hi,

After I bought the car in April 2015, I had a full service and inspection done in May 2015 and it was highlighted that the battery would need replacing before Winter.

Its that time of year and, after being parked for two weeks, a restart yesterday soon flattened the battery. It jump started okay but it has spurred me on to get a new battery.

I've read some of the previous posts / threads with interest. Has anyone got any strong recommendations, please?

I've seen various makes on the web, some with 3 year warranties, some with longer - and the price range is from £60 - £160 for a battery.

The car is a 'weekend' car and I do 3-4,000 miles per year.

Thanks in advance,

Phil

(this means my front bumper off job can wait, but perhaps the new battery will cure the parking sensor fault.......he typed, hopefully!)

Plenty on ebay.

batterymegastore.co.uk have always served me well. About £58 delivered to your door next day for an 019 battery with three year warranty.

Suggest you also buy a mains powered Ctek/Sterling/Mastervolt/Victron type switch mode trickle charger to keep your battery in prime condition on a low use car. This will not only ensure you have good winter engine starts but will also greatly extend battery life. I have a large Sterling unit on my boat which looks after six batteries. I got nearly ten years from those batteries before they finally lost capacity. They lead a hard life!

In my experience (every parking sensor equipped Jag I`ve ever owned) at some point gets parking sensor hissy fits. It comes and goes on a random basis. Sometimes there is no issue for months, then they play up for a few weeks, then settle down again. Cleaning of the connections behind the bumper sensors often helps as does external and internal inspection of the module which lives in the boot wheel well on the left hand side. Unplug and tease the case open. You may find copper sulphate coated components on the pc board. That is not so good. I`ve never found any connection with battery condition affecting sensor operation. DSC, yes. That can be an issue with an ailing battery.

Phil,
You don't say if the car is garaged or if you have access to a 240 volt socket.

Don't be to eager to replace the Battery, if you are able to keep the battery on permanent trickle charge you should be able to accommodate long periods of vehicle not in use.

The two most common Batteries used for the S Type (inc 2.7D & STR) are:

The Varta Silver Dynamic H3 ETN 600402083
http://www.varta-automotive.com/en-g...ic/600-402-083

And:
The Exide Premium 017TE E1000
http://www.exide.info/spec/ea1000.html

Though the Varta is Called Silver Dynamic, it is Lead Acid and does not contain any Calcium or Silver content.

Tanya Batteries have a good reputation:

Although they cost about double a 'normal' battery I am sold on the American 'Optima' brand ; quite unique as their website will explain. The Redtop is the one for starting performance. No topping up and totally leakproof and fumeproof. Have a read.

Thank you all for the replies.

The car is currently on the drive, but will be garaged eventually.
I'll do my reading and research tonight and see where I go from here.

Thanks again,
Phil
