Mileometer and trip info display binnacle replacement?

Postby V93MMA » Tue Feb 26, 2013 12:40 pm

Hi,
New to posting on forums or similar but hoping someone may have experience of this and be able to put me on the right track! The mileometer and trip info display firstly dimmed and now doesn't show at all. All other warning lights are on the panel and the speedo, rev counter and all guages work. Any suggestions as to possible remedy as the car is shortly due for MOT so obviously need the mileage to show. It has been suggested by a friend that we may need to replace the whole instrument control pack/ binnacle - does this sound right? Hopefully not!! :? Looking forward to anyones kind reply! Thank you :)

May I suggest you give a little more information about your car and where abouts in the country you are as interior trim and specification changed over time.

Year,
Standard, S,SE and STR
Engine size and manual or automatic (they took their speed sensing from different places).

Best wishes

Welcome.

These instrument clusters do fail occasionally.

Assuming the cluster is at fault, try Eurojag or North East Jag Spares for a second hand unit or BBA Reman in Rochester for a reconditioned unit. In all cases quote your Vin number.

Hope that helps.

Hi Brian and Mike thank you very much for your replies - for information, the car is a 1999 Jaguar 3 litre SE automatic and I'm based near Birmingham.
Any suggestions on whether it could be anything other than the instrument panel itself that needs replacing, or if theres any way to test it and could they be repaired if at fault rather than buying a replacement, or would that be worth phoning the people you suggested for a reconditioned unit?
Thanks again,
Roland

You will be looking at around £400 for a recon unit.

Second hand would be a cheaper option. Also look on ebay. There is plenty of good kit out there at reasonable prices.

A diagnostic scan is probably the best way to proceed before going further. That takes all the guess work out of the equation.
