Immobiliser Fault?

On my 2002 Sport - sometimes on turning off the ignition and removing the key the 'tumblers?' do not go across. The result is that on replacing the key and turning on the ignition all the appropriate dash lights come on, but the starter does not operate - the engine does not start! A notice 'Steering locked' is displayed but the steering is not locked. Sometimes, removal of the key and re-inserting will cause the 'tumblers' to operate and then all is well. The alternative is to disconnect the battery , and then reconnect it, thereby re-booting the system. This works, but apart from the faff of disconnecting the battery, (now made easier by the fitting of a master switch in the boot) it is necessary to reprogram the radio and window winders. We have replaced the ignition lock and appropriate keys, but the problems persist. Any ideas?

Daft question, I am assuming you have well lubricated the lock?

Not a daft question - we have lubricated the mechanism but to no avail. Re windows stuck open - this doesn't apply in case. All I have to do is re-program the auto opening/closing as per the handbook. John

Does sound like an ignition lock issue, am assuming battery is good etc. Was it a used or new replacement? I suspect you need the services of a good auto electrician?

Hello Folks
Thanks for that ,at wits end, just sent for a maintenance disc £5.99 on Ebay so that I can follow the wire codes and determine which relay is activated to close/open the windows which the Handbook doesn't conveniently tell you unlike the fuse schedule which tells you everything you don't want to know and gives no clue. The problem is obviously common, no fuses are blown so it has to be a relay. I've changed the door control module and the door Mirror/Window/Seat control panel to no effect. Jaguar really need to get their act together if they want to stay in business, but then it's well known that unreliability is a norm with Jaguar, all of my friends are aware of the trouble i've had with this car and universally wouldn't buy a Jaguar. I now have a BMW Mini which just goes and goes . The XF though must be a miracle car I hate to say it but it has performed well for over 100K miles hope I'm not tempting fate.
