Horns

Well folks the S-Type saga continues, the horns don't work now. I've checked fuses, swopped relays around to no avail.I've connected probes to the supply plug at the horn assembly and had my wife pushing the Boss and got a voltage of sorts showing anywhere between 5 and 12 volts. I've applied 12 volts to the horn assembly socket, dead as a dodo. Any ideas.

Two things spring to mind here Dave, the clockspring May be getting worn or you have a wire that is breaking down. Have a look here for the electrical manual for your car, http://www.jagrepair.com/JaguarSTypeEle ... Icodes.htm.

Well folks enthusiasm has returned, went for test drives in a Mercedes A200,and a BMW X3 decided to fix the horns!!!. Found a New set of XF horns on eBay at half Jaguar price but importantly the connecter in the photo looked exactly like the S-Type. Decided to buy after looking at the wiring diagram and reading the "Pinpoint Tests" in the CD Disc manual which at A advised monitoring the voltage at the Horn assembly when pushing the steering wheel Boss and if voltage is present and checking pin 2 to ground ( which I did and got the readings I was supposed to), replacement of defective Horns.
I now have Horns again. The car is reprieved and is still more comfortable to drive amongst other things than those quoted above.
Note mileage is 147574 miles now, and one of the two Horns removed was full of "RUST".

Welcome back! We all have a wobble now and then that tests our faith but the true believers always find their way back!😀

Dave,

A great decision. Last year I took a bit of a career break and did some trade plate driving for a few months. In that time I drove almost every BMW on the market, including their Mini brand, several Mercs and quite a few vans. In my view none of them come close to the performance matched with comfort of my S Type R, which is why I'm trying to restore it.

For example a Mini Cooper JCW didn't have electric seats, fair enough as that can be a weight saving feature, but the seats had very coarse adjustment and were not comfortable. Combined with hard suspension it wasn't a comfortable cruiser. Some of the M cars sound good as they will pop and bang a bit on the overrun, but again they do not have the comfort and available pace that my R does.

Regards,
Steve

Hello Stevekk and Folks
Well I've been away on holiday to Madeira, just got back. What a place to learn to drive, perfect road surfaces paid for by the EU apparently, according to our taxi driver,(his Mercedes had done just short of 800,000 Km). However, the longest stretch of straight road that's fairly level is about 2000metres all the roads are narrow except the new dual carriageway road paid for by the EU, still hilly, bendy, narrow by our standards and many tunnels, all the rest are very narrow and with hairpins like the motoring journalists rave about where if a bus is approaching, you either get squashed against the cliff edge or pushed off with a 1000 ft drop to the sea on every bend. Learning hill starts is a skill quickly learned by the "Learner". I drove a Mercedes 4x4 briefly, definitely a bit harsh and noisy with the dash finish over the top, however the infotainment system is "streets" ahead of Jaguar. Didn't like it, didn't like driving there as well. Still prefer my S-Type, lots of your normal people that aren't really car enthusiasts comment by saying " it looks like a Jaguar" "quality". All the new ones are "throw away designs". I wonder what the old man would say, probably, "if it keeps us in business so what " Finally after a week and a half away, on return, both my cars started first time, amazing!!!! and the Horns are still working.
