Running lights

Postby frankhollis395 » Fri Aug 03, 2018 2:50 pm

Hi. Ref. S-type Sport 2004 2.5L V6 petrol. J400FCH. I noticed at the Beaulieu Jag event recently that a S-type owner had converted the 'fog' lights to what looked like LED running lights.I am a great believer in running lights having them on my Mini Cooper, and would like to do the same. I cannot remember using the fog lights on my S-type so it would appear to be a practical conversion. So, the question is, are there any points against using existing lamps connected to a ignition switched supply as running lights, and is LED not a good idea. Thanks Frank Hollis

Hello Frank

I would guess the running light conversion you saw was a kit from Adamesh. Go on their Web site you'll see various conversions for specific cars.
As far as LED substitution on existing lights is concerned the CAN Bus system requires Component Resistance to operate correctly. The filament in the side lights for example have sufficient Resistance when OFF is selected to go out. If LED's are simply put in place of the filament lights they don't go out , on their own, they have insufficient resistance for the CAN Bus system to see that they should be out. Resistance has to be introduced. Some members have also reported "flickering of the LED's". The Adamesh Kit deals with this. See Mike Kennedy's various Posts.
