Front Side Lights

I changed the front sidelight bulbs for LED's as I did for my XF. However when shutting down and locking the S-Type the Front Side Lights LED's remain illuminated at a dim level (i.e. not at a full power level.). All switches are OFF. This does not happen on the XF.
The lights Front Sidelights only) illuminate at this low power level as soon as the car is unlocked, I have checked the orientation of the bulbs in respect of positive /negative connection wires. They eventually go out after about an hour. I am going to change back to filament bulbs when it's light tomorrow to see if anything changes. Any ideas folks???

What key fob do you have, David? Three or four button?

I have a four button fob on my X350. That fourth button works a headlight over-ride. Pushing the button once brings on sidelights. Pushing it again turns the headlight dips on to help you stumble to your front door in the dark!. Its quite easy to accidentally tweek it when locking or unlocking the car or putting the key in your pocket. Might that be the cause? Can`t think of anything else or pull on any other previous experience. May be our Doug might be able to help further.

Thanks, my fob also has the headlight button, I’ll try that to see what happens before changing LED’s.

Well folks I tried the Fob headlamp activation button :- no change, the side light LED's remained on at low power. I have replaced the filament bulbs and they are now off. So "thoughts".Is the CAN Bus system positively charged for sometime after shutting down the car? answer, yes, whilst the system goes through it's shutting down and alarming processes. Is this charge sufficient to illuminate the sensitive LED's but not filament bulbs?:-- seems so, and does this charge slowly die away after all the systems are set?, seems so, after about an hour. Is the XF different insofar as everything happens quicker?.
Perhaps Jaguar know?.
Finally the LED's I have used are from Halfords, very good they are too, so I'll keep the 2 I have now as spares for the XF. I have seen in Magazines and online LED's for sale that are advertised as suitable for cars with CAN Bus systems has anybody any comment.

I`ve had CANBUS LED lamps on my 350 sidelights. Great...nice and bright BUT prone to flickering. So now back to some Osram bright conventional halogen. Much better in as much as the lamp flickers have gone!

I think it was Brian G who said in a post recently that the sidelights are not on the CANBUS circuitry. I`ve not had a chance yet to look at the wiring diagram. I wonder if my putting CANBUS LED lamps in my 350 was therefore the cause of the flickering. Perhaps non CANBUS LED lamps might have been a better choice?

The use of LED side lamps in S-type or X350 appears to be somewhat of a successful hit or a disappointing miss situation. I think we need to experiment a bit more as regards what LED types are best. CANBUS LED with inbuilt resistor would to my thinking and experience appear to be a miss. Has anyone here tried non CANBUS LED lamps in sidelights?

The LED's I've used are coded 501w5w, 35 Lumens, Cool White, 6000k. There is no reference to CAN Bus compatibility so I assume there is none.
I am going to get some as advertised with CAN Bus compatibility and try then. Will report in due course. On another topic the dreaded ABS Fault has come back. The iSoft Reader say's it the rear right sensor:- no signal. When it reported first time it said there was a tooth missing. Now it consistently reports:- no signal after resetting. So out with the toothbrush again only this time I'm going to change the sensor cable and sensor for good measure.

That sounds a fair course of action, Dave. Brave man. Too cold for me to get out there and do car repairs in these winter temperatures.

Some time back I created a thread about replacement drive shaft reluctor rings being available from the after-market. I`ll try and find it. Probably on this S-type section.

Hello Mike and Folks
I've ordered a pair of CAN Bus compatible LED's from "China" Bejing actually, online for a Tenner! what is the world coming to. Will report soonest, they are due to me on Wednesday it's all magic really and DHL. As far as the ABS warning is concerned I had a funny turn and had a Top Wash at the local Shell Station which included a chassis wash underneath. Low and Behold ,I went in with the alarm showing , I cleared the alarm with the iSoft and it didn't come back when I drove home.
Clearly a dodgy connection and/or mud on the castellations of the reluctor ring once again. Must stop driving over muddy fields.

I've had this problem with household lighting, if the unit household or vehicle was not set up to use LED bulbs they will not work correctly.
They will flicker and when switched off will still glow. Apparently it's something to do with the voltage.

Well folks had a go at the reluctor ring today lots of rust and debris on it, cleaned it off with a small wire brush on my battery drill and a small toothbrush sized soft wire brush. The castellations are now as good as they are going to get. As far as the connection wire etc is concerned I looked and looked online and it came down to 2 types a wire with connections fitted, supposed suitable for my year car, and a sensor head unit only, also supposed to fit my year that connected to the wire piece. The Wire piece partJXR8 49760 is quoted at £103.54 plus VAT and the Wheel Sensor part JXR8 22753 £98.13 from Jaguar Main Dealer. My VIN range is N.
Online various prices are quoted for a complete wire piece with connectors from £25 to £132 inc' VAT with the connectors and sensor end as a complete assembled unit. For the wheel sensor alone plugging in to the end of the connection wire piece 49760 is quoted between £19.99 and £45.
Clearly the online versions are from China and the like. So that when I started the job, I bought the cheapest of the complete wire type and the sensor head only type, when I got the unit visible I could see which of the 2 types was right. The clue was in the quote I got from the Jag Dealer of course i.e. 2 Parts. The complete wire assembly type is wrong for my car. One end fits to the harness wiring but the sensor end although it fits in the location hole and bolts up the sensor head is not long enough to be in the correct proximity of the castellations. The type JXR8 22753 is the correct replacement unit. Finally when I removed the sensor header there wasn't any sign of significant damage to the unit head other than a small scratch and verdigris on the brass securing bolt ring where it contacted the brake assembly. ABS and DSC alarms have now gone.

Yes we had about an inch of snow and the car was covered but the sun was out and I was itching to have a go having got the parts.
All was as expected and I drove the car afterwards around the Chilterns quite a lot to convince myself I'd fixed it. I'm getting too old to be removing wheels and getting under cars but I get a good feeling of satisfaction when it all works out. Thank heaven for Jaguars!!!!!!
