Re: Door lock on an early car, how do they work!!!
Hi Martec,
So do we now call you the Master of the Lock!
You have certainly invested some time into this project and your tenacity has paid off. We know were to come for help, even a repair at a price.
If my fading memory is right, you tell us that your early model has an electric motor that shifts, I presume a rack but later cars use a solenoid. If this is the case, do you consider it feasible to replace all four lock assemblies of the earlier type with the later type?
We have read about door locks getting up to tricks often connected with dodgy batteries etc but have we any evidence of later type lock failure
Once again well done
Oldtimer

Re: Door lock on an early car, how do they work!!!
Thanks I'm really please to be so anal as to be 'the master of locks'!!!
From what I was told by Bob Bates at the S type seminar, complaints about the noise of the earlier Jaguar locks from the solenoids as they operate caused Jaguar to change over to the motorised lock as it is quieter (not to wake your neighbours first thing in the morning).
From research on Ebay and various jag spares sites it would seem that pre- L50000 ish chassis/car number did not have deadlocking. But Roger's lock was from a 1999 car and had deadlocking???? (identical to my 2000 L83000 car. I also got the impression that later locks were in someway different but I can't find anything definitive.
Talking to an AA guy he seemed to think that after 2005 ish the car will relock itself if left for any length of time and if single locked it will deadlock itself after a set time???? Our 2006 focus has certainly locked itself if left, but not always (found it open the other night), but that is all down to the ECU's/ modules. I believe this is all at the behest of the insurance companies?
Sorry not to be able to help you 'Oldtimer' with the sill clips.
Best wishes
Brian
PS as anyone who has had a good look under an S type will know there is 'FORD' stamped everywhere and again from ebay searches the S type locks are completely different to any other Jaguar, even the X type.
