Throttle actuater sender fault

Postby SDRIVER » Sun Nov 12, 2017 5:38 pm

I am getting a P1584 fault code which is as above a throttle actuater sender fault which I believe is an intermittent fault as it has happened one or two times where the nine stutters and the engine in fail safe mode warning comes on then gos out again but leaves the check engine light on and the car drives as normal.
Has anyone had this problem and cured it themselves I would imagine it's some electronic sender unit attached in one way to the throttle pedal but haven't investigated further yet always best to ask for advice from people that have tackled things before than just diving in any help much appreciated .....John

John,

P1584 implies and points at a throttle body fault. Suggest you check and clean the pins and plug connections on the throttle body as a starter. You may just have a bit of corrosion present. Try that before thinking about a new (expensive), remanufactured throttle (still pricey) or a good known used throttle which you should be able to source for £50-£100. Eurojag, Autoreserve or ebay would be good for second hand parts and prices. If you do change the throttle body, you will need a new gasket which is about £6. Just four long Torx bolts secure the throttle to the manifold. Removal of the throttle is not a difficult job. Done it myself on several occasions to good effect. The throttle plate should snap shut with an audible "pop" if everything is spotlessly clean. Go very easy on the PTFE throat coating when cleaning. It is easily damaged.

Throttle bodies are rarely cleaned out. A large amount of crank case breater gunk can accumulate within the throttle throat. Carburettor cleaner and soft link free cloth and perhaps a very soft paint brush is useful for gunk removal. Wear latex gloves or you will get your hands very black! It can be a flithy job. Gunk obstructs airflow around the throttle plate which can lead to poor slow speed running and sluggish throttle response. Throat cleaning can also sometimes rid a car of fault codes.

Try these ideas and see how you get on.

Thanks for your input I'm thinking more on the lines of it being a fault at the pedal end after going on eBay and finding loads of throttle pedals for sale as if it's a common problem and it's quite a cheap fix if it is that.I have also noticed recently that the car seems to keep driving with no throttle input as if it's sticking slightly and also a bit of lag or dead pedal feel when going from accelerating to braking as if the throttle hasn't released before hitting the brake and the servo cutting in so first off it's going to be a new throttle pedal I think and see what happens
Thanks again ....John

The throttle pedal potentiometer can become affected by dampness, John.

Remove the pedal unit from the car and place on your boiler overnight. That is quite a well known and often productive fix. Similarly as for the throttle body plug, make sure the throttle pedal pug and socket are dry and corrosion free. Try that before replacing the pedal unit.
