I would agree that changing the oil works wonders, but it does have to be done professionally and some main dealers are reluctant to do it.

My gearbox broke at 45,000 miles and was replaced under warranty. It suffered from the "lurch" (the lurch has its own website!) and the squawk prior to giving up the ghost.

The replacement started to squawk late last year so I had the fluid changed by my main dealer, and an additive added (Jaguar know about this) and the box has been fine since. Now at 93,000 miles.

Rough changes can often be cured by a software update.

On older S-Types if you park on a hill, set the handbrake before selecting Park (basic highway code stuff - brake then gear) otherwise it may be difficult to engage drive or reverse afterwards as the car is resting on the interlock.

It is not a DIY job.

I`ve seen "The Lurch" web site and can understand the Swiss guy who had a real battle on his hands to get his lurch fixed. The six speed unit is a little prone to this and the reflashes help but the additive seems more helpful.

It would appear that reflash software is constantly being updated for the six speed units. As these boxes have been arround since 1993, surely all the bugs should have been sorted by now. Often, this does not seem to be the case.
