Exhaust problem??

Postby thomas45 » Thu Feb 12, 2015 12:26 am

I have only had this 07 diesel2.7 since Dec and now I have this problem which I think may be the exhaust down pipe. I had at first noticed some smoke from the engine bay but put it down to the diesel fired preheater which has been going when outside temp was very low. However later on raising the bonnet I saw that there was a soot deposit on the engine covers etc, mostly on the left passenger side towards the bulkhead. Following this I then discovered a lack of power particularly when driving uphill and with abnormal noise.
I now expect that I will have to take the car to a garage workshop and at least have it examined but I dread to think what the outcome will be.
Could anyone give me some opinion about this please. :?:

I`m not that knowledgeable about the diesel models but I believe there can be issues with a flexi down pipe.

Something appears to have given up but I suspect it will be quite evident where the failure has occurd. Try Googling the subject and see what advice might be available.

I expect there will be another member seeing this post that may be able to shed further light on the issue.

Probably best to nip the car to a local Jaguar independent and see what he can find.

Sorry I can`t be more helpful with this matter.

This is a fairly common problem with the V6 diesel engine and occurs in the S Type, XF and X350 XJ. The cats have a flexible pipe going into them that fails and leaks. The "official" fix is to replace the cat for that side but you don't want to know how much that costs!
The unofficial fix is to cut the flexi pipe off and replace it with a solid pipe. There are kits available on ebay and the like to do this with and I think even Jaguar sell one.
Are you getting exhaust fumes into the cabin? That's a common symptom.
Hope that helps

Car into independent garage early this morning and inspection showed that a couple of pipe clamps were missing near the front. However the leak is somewhere at the engine and to get to it requires a bit of a strip down. Also on acceleration there is what I can only describe as a harsh kind of a screech. So there may be more, I have my suspicions but I dont want to contemplate the unmentionable. The job can not be started til the 23rd so although power is not too bad I will
avoid driving it.

Martin It could be in your case that it is the pre-heater fumes on initial start-up when outside temp is very low. Some say press the climate control auto button and drive away soonest.
I would be interested to see this mod kit you mention that is on E-bay and I have heard of a similar/same issue on a VW Touran. The driver of that told me he had just stopped at traffic lights when suddenly cloud of smoke obscuring windscreen. Later the VW dealer fitted something to alleviate the problem.

Update on exhaust problem

Postby thomas45 » Tue Mar 03, 2015 1:51 am

Well its up and running again now and better than it had been even before the unfortunate event.
The diagnosis was a cracked catalytic- convertor which was repaired ( think specialist weld, not sure) and a new flexi-down pipe. Power is really good now and the issue of the fumes is no more.
Sometimes in very cold weather at start-up, the preheater will engage but I dont find any fumes getting into the cabin.
I had left the car in the hands of a small independent workshop and at the time I wondered if they would know much about Jags, They had my car for the best part of a week but they came up Trumps. When I came to collect it I was prepared for a very big bill but was amazed that it was four or five times less than expected. Then I noticed that they had three other Jags and a Range-Rover awaiting collection so any doubt was dispelled.
Faith is restored and I must recommend this independent to anyone who may be in this area of the north-west of NI. I dont have the post code but they are 'Murrays of Campsie' near Londonderry. :D
