Oil

Any recommendations for engine oil for a 4.2 V8 (n/a)?
Full/semi synthetic, brand?
Any advice gratefully received.

Hi Steve,
I use Castrol Magnatec or Castrol Edge 5-30 Fully Synthetic for my 4.0L V8.
I change the oil every year regardless of how many miles I've done.
Any good quality 5-30 Fully Synthetic would be ok.

Who are you using for your gearbox service or are you doing it yourself? I'm trying to decide whether to do my Jag-engined Range Rover gearbox myself this time, or take it back to Tom Lenthall who did it previously.

I am going to Mike Allen services in Swindon; I checked and they have experience of doing it.
Tom Lenthall has moved near Reading now.

Bit of a fingers crossed on this one; they did the transfer box on the X Type a few years ago and unfortunately, whomever supplied them with the box gave them a duff one so it had to go back and be done again.
Twice.
Still, they sorted it but having spent over 2 grand on it I traded it in for £800 against a Freelander 2.
Just lost faith in the car.
Freelander 2 is brilliant by the way, absolutely love it.

Completely forgot to report back on this but the car seems fine since the 'box oil change.
No really noticeable difference, possibly a bit smoother on the changes, but certainly no worse and now have peace of mind.

Now to figure out if I am imagining a slightly high initial tickover on first start up of the day.
