2.7D loss of power and eventual stop, but no warning lights

So, my first post on here and a bit of a puzzle...
Our beloved Jag lost power whilst driving along last week, shortly going down to idle with no response from the throttle pedal, and eventually the engine stopped completely. No warning lights were on and there were no error messages showing. After re starting with no problems it drove another couple of miles and did the same thing again, again with no lights or messages etc. restarted again and drove the last mile to home.
The following day tried again, started ok and idled happily for several minutes but a short drive produced the same problem. Restarted and then ran fine for a short while but eventually the problem reoccurred.
Today I plugged in a Foxwell NT301 but it found no codes present or stored, although the yellow (!) illuminated on the handset of the device...
Battery is a two year old Exide Premium HD
Any ideas gents? Or any suggestions for a reputable indie garage in the Herts/Beds area....

What an odd combination of factors! The information about your code reader being unable to read any codes may suggest a wiring issue, something which the S-Type is prone to. Mike.

That sounds ominous!
I have done a couple of short runs since posting having done nothing except adding some 'premium' diesel and so far the problem has not reoccurred..... (tank was just under 1/4 previously).
Off to visit the nearest indie I could find tomorrow to see if a more sophisticated diagnostic device can coax any codes out, will
keep you posted...

I wonder if you might have a quantity of water in the fuel tank.

Worth adding some Dry Fuel additive from outlets such as Halfords. I`ve seen this type of issue on diesel powered boats. The additive will mop up any small amounts of water and make it possible for the absorbed water to be burnt along with the fuel without damaging the fuel pumps or injectors. Worth also changing the fuel filter. That could be water logged.

Just my take on the matter and worth the small cost to tackle what might be the cause of the issue.

Hmm, interesting.. I had wondered about water or some such in the fuel... I didn't know there was an additive that would help.
Will investigate further, many thanks!
