Hi Everyone,
I have replaced my engine (Jaguar S Type Petrol V6 3 litre) with a second hand engine, as the head gasket blew on the motorway. It starts and runs well, it goes through all the rev cycle, no problems. But when you test drive it, after about 300 metres it goes into limp mode! We've checked the following:
1) Check for air leaks. 2) Sensor functions and voltage tests all OK. 3) Cleaning Throttle housing and re-setting throttle position sensor / switch. Is it possible that the engine ECU is not re-setting the basic settings on the replacement second-hand engine?
Please reply here or email a copy to <brains.net@ntlworld.com>. Many thanks.
Does a second-hand engine need a remap?

I think the starting point is try and get some fault codes if possible?

Re: Does a second-hand engine need a remap?
Hi Andy,
Thanks for the swift response. I think we got a fault code p1582 - "Data stored in Flight Recorder." We sent the car to a Jaguar dealership in Leeds to have the fault removed. They simply gave me a report of everything that they thought was wrong with the car, and some "special offers" of new and used jags on the market, and I had to pay a bill of just under £200!!! No fault removed! No wonder people don't trust dealerships anymore!

That's main dealers for you!
I think that is a generic code which does not tell you much, I am pretty sure that you do not need to reprogramme the ECU, especially as it runs fine for some time before going into limp home mode, but I am straying beyond my knowledge! I would email David Marks and ask him, the club will have his details, alternatively there are others on here much wiser than me who will probably chip in. You don't say what age the car is? That's useful to know, as OBD connectivity was advancing rapidly from late 90s to early 2000s, so the capability of reading codes changed a lot with model years. If you have access to a good independent Jaguar specialist that would be helpful, as hopefully they will have the Jaguar Topix system. Also the local branch of the JEC may be helpful.

fitman207,
As I understand it, a P1582 is a summary status because of one or more other faults. I also believe that you can't just reset it with a simple code scanner. It needs the Jaguar WDS /SDD software to do it. See if this link helps your thinking at all:

Also you might want to ask one of the club technical advisors such as David Marks if the car needs to have it's throttle body coded to the ecu as you've changed the engine etc.
Good luck
Paul
