Missfiring diesel

Postby Filmdori » Thu Aug 02, 2018 5:08 am

I have a 2004 2.7 diesel and it has a miss fire on one bank, it seems to be moving from cylinder to cylinder.
I have had the injectors changed and the ECU checked, the car was looked at by Jaguar solutions in Cheltenham but they never managed to fix it.
I have heard that the Cam chains can stretch and this maybe the fault as the timing is now out on one side ???

Any help as I need to get this fixed asap

Thanks
Dan

Hello
Bearer of bad news, get your garage to check the Gearbox, specifically the Torque Convertor. My 2005 2.7 had exactly the same symptoms and the Jag Main Dealer, even after chasing and changing injectors around the engine and EGR diaphragms, couldn't fix it. JLR got involved directly in the end along with a different Main Dealer. Result new gearbox. Note the Cam Drive is a Belt not a Chain.

The exhaust cams are driven by the belt but the inlet cams are by chain, driven by the exhaust cams.

Hello Jeff
Correct, the right hand chain also drives the vacuum pump ref EGR diaphragms and brake servo. The primary timing belt drive is a belt recommended by Jaguar to be changed at 120K or there about, mine shredded at 82K. I had to have have a new gearbox as a result of a so called miss-fire. All to do with the electronic conversation between the gearbox and the engine management ECM's when the Torque convertor let go for a fraction of a second.

I can rule out the Torque converter as my car is a manual, also getting a handbrake warning now too and it says its been put into limp mode.

I have plugged a code reader in and got the following codes P020 and P062 I also have a parking brake alarm even when the car is sat idling and the brake un touched.
Also when I run the Dash menu the car is showing 15 DTC codes, is this normal ?
Any help would be great.

Hello Filmdori
My car has now done 149k miles and is just about to to go in for a oil and filter change on the gearbox now having done 65k on the "Jaguar quote:- sealed for Life gearbox" for which Jaguar sell an oil change kit!!!!. I am not familiar with the clutch on a manual version but is it a Dual Mass system does anybody know?. My son's Audi has a Dual Mass clutch which failed and put the car in Limp Home mode. I'm sure you've looked up the the codes. P020 being a timing issue associated with, amongst other things the Oxygen Sensor, and P062 was subject to a safety recall in the US affecting nearly 2500 Jaguar Land Rovers, associated with the ABS/ Brake system. Both codes required a re-boot/update of the relevant ECM's. Hope this helps.
Maybe this is all red herrings but the experts say that this particular series of faults is a nightmare to deal with.

Thanks for the reply Dave, I have since put another code reader on and got a bit more detail.
its showed the following error codes.
P062E - Fuel Injector Driver Circuit Performance Bank 2
P020D - Cylinder 4 injection Timing
P020E - Cylinder 5 Injection Timing
P020F - Cylinder 6 Injection Timing
Has anyone had this error before and could point me to a good cause. We have fuel in the fuel rail with good pressure and all wiring looks ok.
