Oil Pressure Warning Light

Hi Folks,i am New to Jaguar ownership and this Forum.Hoping you can Help with a Problem. I have recently purchased a 2005 2.7 TD S Type and i have noticed on initial start-up and if the Engine as not been run for a while,the Oil Pressure Light takes 2-3 Seconds to go out .Is this a common Fault and something to be concerned about ? Hello Bernard.

I`m not sure if this is a common fault but oil pressure should be there sufficiently quickly to pop the light out almost immediately the engine cranks and fires. Oil flow and pressure is vital.

You might have a sluggish switch or pressure relief valve. There could of course be other reasons, such as a low engine oil level. Going further, the car could just need an oil and filter change.

High mileage and general engine wear are other reasons as is the ever present issue of diesel fuel diluting engine oil to the point that the oil becomes almost useless as a lubricating medium. Cars used for short journeys are prone to this problem and need oil changes twice (at least) as regularly as a car used for long motorway hauls.

The 2.7d is not a car to use for short journeys. The above lubrication problem if left unattended can also lead to blocked DPF filters and excessive engine wear.

I would suggest you find a local independent Jaguar specialist and see what he has to say about your issue.

Hi Bernard I wouldn't worry to much mine is about the same and its only done 67k I change the oil and filter once a year after 4-5000 mls. Mike does have a point about low mileage but my car is 2004 pre DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) so low milage is not a problem. The way to tell the difference between DPF and non DPF is the tail pipes, if they point downwards its non DPF if they come strait out it has DPF.

If yours does have DPF and you do shot journeys I would take it for a run up the motorway once a week to get the engine nice and hot so the DPF can re-generate/burn off any particulates that have collected in the filter. Also keep your eye on the oil level

Following my last post, on initial start up i start engine and switch of immediately to prime oil pressure. On second start the oil light goes straight out. I appreciate this increases wear on Starter Motor and these are not the easiest to change but weighing this against premature wear on the Engine i think this is probably the easiest option.

I have a 3 ltr petrol S type and in my early researches I found that Jaguar had changed the oil filter from a 6 small hole to 8 large hole type. A new aftermarket filter I got was a copy of the early filter.

I know nothing of the diesel engine in your car, but it might well be worth changing the oil again and ensuring a Jaguar filter is used.

On another car some years ago A 'Unipart' filter suddenly took longer to build up oil pressure, I finally found the batch of 4 I had bought were different to the old one and were made in 'China', they were failing (internal seal blowing out).

Hi Brian, many thanks for your reply. I did make sure that i fitted a Genuine Jaguar filter but i think part of the problem is that the Filter is vertical on top of the Engine and this drains of when not used for a while. The Oil was changed less than a Hundred miles ago but i will be changing it again soon as the previous owner only used the car for Short journeys and it maybe a case of Over fueling thinning the oil down. Better the cost of a Oil change than unnecessary Engine wear.

It is imperative that you keep a close eye for any rise in oil level due to over-fueling caused by multiple cold starts with insufficient warm ups and clogged DPF filters which also suffer badly from short journey injury.

My own preference would be that once you start the engine, I would continue to run it to full hot condition rather than switching off and then restarting. In such an instance of a double cold start, unburned fuel would find its way down past the piston rings and dilute the engine lubricating oil. Hence the potential issue of rising oil levels.

Diluted engine oil can cause engine failure due to excessive and terminal main and big end wear. An engine so damaged would require a replacement which is nowadays more cost effective than a crank regrind and bearing shell replacement. A couple of years ago, a new bare 2.7d engine block was priced at nearly £4500 plus fitting and VAT.
