Mis fire No 2 Cylinder

Postby sheldon1 » Fri Apr 29, 2016 1:12 pm

Had a diagnostic check , and revealed I have a misfire on no 2 cylinder 3.0 S type.

I was going to replace all spark plugs and coils, any other suggestions to rectify?

Could breather pipes be blocked up?

Thanks

Paul

Hi Paul,

Our car is an early 3 ltr and as there was a sizable lip/step into the garage, the car would stall unless I kept the revs up. This is a common fault, apparently because the plugs on the drivers side of the engine require the inlet maifold being taken off..........they are often not changed. Plugs have a life and when they fail they will also take the 'coil on plug' with it.

I decided not to go to the expense of a diagnostic test to tell me what I already suspected so bought 6 NGK Iridium plugs (look on their website of recommended plugs) off Ebay and 6 coils from NE jaguar spares. I then contacted Marshalls in Lincoln and told the storeman what I was going to do and asked what joints I needed to replace..........the reply was the joint between the inlet manifold and the injector housing will take a good two uses, but the joint between the housing and top of the engine has to be replaced each time. As I was only taking the manifold off I didn't need any new joints.

I found that I had different plugs in the left and right bank, but the low speed stumble has gone now.

There are a lot of small plastic pipes in the way so if you take your time and photograph everything with drawing to be sure then it is an easy job to do. It also gives you an oportunity to inspect and/or change the two rubber connectors at the back end of the manifold which are a common problem as well (mine had been changed just before I bought it).

Why Iridium? on our MkII the gas eats the plugs, but the Iridium plugs last 4 times as long.

I hope that helps

Brian
PS be careful when undoing and tightening the 8? bolts in the middle holding the manifold on, you are bolting into plastic and alloy, ignore any torques settings and carefully FEEL them only just tight. Also use the support on the drivers side of the engine to support the manifold, last off and first on, but slack.

Thanks Brian for your advice .

In the meantime I have cleaned out the throttle body and MAF sensor and applied cataclean to the petrol tank.
