Rear wheel removal.

Hi,

Is there a special way to remove the rear wheels from my E-type? I have never before taken the rear wheels off myself, but when I tried recently I couldn't do it. I jacked the car up in the centre at the rear so that the rear suspension hung down as far as it could. ( I had previously loosened the hub spinner.) No matter how I tried to manoeuvre the wheel I couldn't get it to come off below the wheel arch. My mechanic says let air out of the tyres, is that right? It seems a poor way to change a tyre if I have a puncture.

Hello Martin,

not having E Type experience my view can hardly be authoratitive, however I can't say I have heard that deflating the tyre is necessary.

Personally I would jack the suspension of the wheel you wish to remove, i.e. lift the wheel more into the wheel arch and see if it comes out that way. If it does it would suggest that whatever controls the droop of the wheel is incorrect, possibly the dampers?
One problem with our older cars is to know what bits have been fitted and what work has been done that may be incorrect? For example is tha subframe central to the body, or has the body been repaired badly in teh past?

No doubt some E Type owner can give some enlightenment?

Hi Martin, I agree with Alec. You shouldn't need to let air out. What model do you have and do you have standard size tyres? Is the wheel free on the hub or is it sticking? If free and all standard then you shouldn't need to do more than angle out the bottom of the wheel as it comes off.
