Rear hatch seal replacement S2 2+2

Hi all,

seal on my S2 2+2 rear hatch looking rather perished, thought there would be heaps of guidance available (surely someone has done this on YouTube?) but can only find advice on door and window seals. Foolishly assume it is a razor removal of the old one, clean and then replace with glue job, but assumption usually bites me on the backside...

White spirit to clean off old glue? Which glue to use? Seen a comment somewhere that you should not use evostick as it suffers from temperature issues and suspect there must be better more modern glues out there now.

All help welcome, or link to any previous post which I have not managed to find because of my lack of IT skills........

Hi Chris,

This happens to be a job on my list, but I was going to have a look around at as many tailgates as I can at the Windsor weekend to make sure I get it right.

I bought some new seals from SNG Barrett to replace my current ones which some previous owner had stuck to the tailgate rather than in the gulley surrounding the opening! One thing I want to be very careful of is not to block the drain hole at the bottom of the gulley as I understand that can cause water to get into the rear compartment.

I bought some High Heat Resistant Contact Adhesive from BAS International, which I think will be more like Thixofix than Evostick.....it's what they recommended anyway. Also found some Evostick Adhesive Cleaner in B&Q, which is pretty much thinners I believe....had to prove I was old and wasn't going to sniff it!, and it is recommended that you use a mask and in the fresh air, so it must be pretty good stuff?! But I haven't used it yet so can't confirm.

I'll let you know how I get on, post Windsor.

Well you'd be amazed (or perhaps not!) at the variety of seals in the back of e-types of all ages, and equally the different ways they've been applied!

After having chatted to many owners, I took the view that the car in the concours competition was probably right! So, the seal sits in the gulley of the opening, the easiest way to describe it is with the curve going from the inside edge pointing out. Hope that makes sense....and yes, make sure the drain hole isn't covered.

Still haven't done mine yet.......good luck!

Thanks Simon, been very slack and still not done this, burning need to tune carbs and replace a head gasket have taken priority.

Will proceed as you suggest when car is back in home garage across the rest of the winter.
