Hi Steve, Jaguar car / chassis numbering is a 'black art' in most cases, especially the E-type, but the gurus would seem to indicate that a chassis number that begins 8888XX should indeed be a 1963 3.8 litre LHD Fixed Head Coupe. For a LHD OTS (Roadster) the chassis number should be between 875001 - 881887.

One source of information on E-type numbering can be found here - safe link: http://www.xkedata.com/catalog/numbers/

and here: https://www.jaguarheritage.com/files/e- ... umbers.pdf

Of course it would not be overly abnormal for an original Coupe to have been modified into a Roadster, that has been done before, if rare.

There is sometimes a 'hidden' chassis number tag on the E-type, but it can be removed in a renovation and not reinstated. There is a small plate, behind the rear number plate itself, attached to the shell, which also advises the body / chassis number.

Unless there is a compelling evidence file to the contrary, the car you are looking at would appear to have a strange pedigree.

Hi Jim Thanks for time and effort in replying.
I did a little further investigating with the vender and the vehicle had had a body swap. (Coupe to Roadster) in the States.
Cars now sold so if anyone knows of an S1 Roadster needing work or recommissioning I’m in the market.
Thanks again Steve
