Bell SS exhaust system

I've just installed a new Bell SS exhaust system. The build quality of the system is good, but I'm concerned about it's performance. The original SS system of unknown manufacturer and which was 18 years old, had a rich raunchy sound, expected of the 3.8L S1 E Type. However the new Bell system is very quiet and so dissapointing. In addition, the additional back pressure does nothing to enhance performance.

Any comments welcome. :(

I have a Bell system on my 3.8 and it is as you say a bit muted. The car was intended to be a Grand Tourer and when using it that way a loud exhaust is the last thing you want - very wearing. Around 4k rpm though it's still music.

Does anyone have a severe drone inside their car when accelerating? I have a 4.2 FHC S2 and even after reverting back to a standard exhaust the drone on a long run leaves me with a massive head ache.

I'm a brand new E-Type owner so I've got nothing to compare with, but yes, my S2 4.2 FHC also has a loud and unpleasant drone inside the car when on the power (such as when cruising at motorway speeds).
I've got to change my exhausts anyway, (as I've got a Getrag 5-speed gearbox which leaves me with only 2.5 inches of ground clearance under the main silencers of the standard system (!)) so I shall be looking for a bespoke, and quieter, system.

If anyone has experience of getting a bespoke exhaust system made, or can recommend a supplier, I'd be interested to hear from you.

Thanks, David.

A bit late now David, but if you haven't got around to this then I can recommend the exhaust I've just bought from Derek Watson (Watjag). I know where he gets them made and his price is much lower than if you go direct to the manufacturer.

Workmanship is superb and it looks glorious. You can also specify how much baffling you want. You could also get Derek's team on fitting it for you. They really know what they're doing.

The good thing about this system is that it is well proven as they are all that Watjag use in their own workshops.
