Series 1.5 ots steering column conversion LHD to RHD

Postby heronscourt » Wed Apr 28, 2021 11:03 pm

I’m restoring a series 1.5 1968 roadster and converting from LHD to RHD. Most of the conversion is relatively straightforward, new RHD loom, RHD rack, dash panels and glove box, change organ
style accelerator pedal for pendulum style and bend the clutch pedal to give correct spacing, re route brake lines and re position master cylinder plus numerous minor details.
The issue I haven’t solved is the repositioning of the steering column. My upper column is LHD only and does not relocate to the right. The mounting points for the lower mounting on the upper column has 4 holes whereas the column only has two holes. The upper mounting bracket is different to RHD and the column mounting points differ. All of this means the upper column doesn’t line up with the lower column and the gap between the two is too great for the UJ to make the connection. It looks like I need the series1/1.5 outer column and brackets etc. The upper inner column looks to be the same but does the lower column from LHD fit this arrangement. Has anyone come across this issue and solved it. Any advice, information etc will be most welcome as it’s holding up progress at the moment

Hello heronscourt,

are the brackets the only difference. If so Thye could be cut off and new brackets made and welded on to the tube?

I'm assuming that it is difficult to find the correct item?
