Help,

Does anybody have a list of torque settings for the relevant parts of the suspension or know where I can find them? I am particularly interested in those applicable to the castellated nuts holding the bottom end of the front shock absorbers.

I have 3 workshop manuals from 3 different publishers and they only specify settings applicable to the cylinder head and the big ends.

Try the Haynes manual I am sure everything you need is in there. I know my Haynes manual tells you the relevant torque settings if its not in there and you are using nyloc nuts then just tighten them up as best you can with the correct size spanner. The length of the spanner gives a good indication of when you can't tighten it anymore then its tight.

There is a website somewhere that will give you the correct torque settings for any particular nut. Search Google for torque settings.

I recently found a useful website. It belongs to Norbar, who make good quality torque wrenches and other interesting bits of kit. They have a torque calculator on the site, but be careful, it quotes MAXIMUM torque values. Still a useful guide though. Go to www.norbar.com

Watch things like shock absorber bolts because they often need to allow a little movement to prevent squeaks and knocks. The only guidance the Jaguar manual gives on these is to tighten them only when the weight of the car is on them.

Also, watch the quality of the fasteners you use. Some suppliers will sell you lower rated nuts and bolts in order to maximise profits. Ensure you use T rated as a minimum where steering, brakes and suspension are concerned. They cost a little more but there's no point in compromising safety (could also be insurance issues).
