Suspension noise – gentle crack

Postby PhilBell » Tue Sep 13, 2011 2:26 pm

When passing over significant bumps (on/off my driveway, speed humps) at low speed I hear a gentle crack sound from the suspension.

I've tried bouncing the car when static and rocking roadwheels with the car jacked up but can't dulpicate the noise, making diagnosis impossible so far.

It's a 1962 FHC that was fully rebuilt by the previous owner in 2008 with new parts throughout. Everything looks new and clean underneath so I'd be surprised if there's anything old and worn out, unless a repro part has failed prematurely. It's done about 3000 miles since the rebuild, all with me, so I know it hasn't suffered any impacts or abuse. There were no noises for the first 2000 miles.

I have heard of other E-types with this problem, but not found anyone who successfully diagnosed and cured it.

Hi Phil

Is the noise coming from the front or rear suspension?

Sounds like it's coming from the front, but noises can transmit around a car bodyshell so I can't be sure.

After more testing I'm sure the sound is coming from the front because sometimes I feel it through the steering wheel. Now I'd say the sound is more of a dull clunk than a sharp crack.

Fixed!

Took the car to CMC in Shropshire where they found several front suspension bolts weren't tight enough, even though they were secured with split pins, allowing the bushes to rotate under load with a jump.
