Hello everybody !
My name is Dave and I am a new member starting from April this year.
I am the proud owner of an E-Type Series 2 OTS (one of the early Series 2, which left the factory in Dec. 1968) and am currently coping with a petrol smell from the trunk. It seems that all pipes (rubber pipes in the meantime) from the petrol pump to the tank are fine, but the smell is tremendous ! No chance to stock some luggage there, no leak in the luggage compartment.
I read in the Collectors´Guide of Paul Skilleter that all Series 2 have no vent pipe and shouldn´t even have one (!) , in order to avoid fuel evaporation and consequent unuseful petrol.
Did anyone cope with the same problem and is there any solution or hint to solve it ?
Thanks in advance for your help !
Cheers !
Dave
Petrol smell from the luggage compartment - Help !
Hi Dave,
I don't much about the S2 or the fuel configuration but if your car has a plate like the series one where the pump suction pipe goes into the tank then renewing the cork gasket might help, it did on mine.
Also the fuel sender unit gasket.
My car is a very early S1 with the submerged fuel pump and has a large cork seal.
Do you find the smell is always there or when when you fill the tank up to the top with fuel?
Dave

I have an S2 OTS '70 (note LHD so has USA carbon canisters). Mine too had a really strong smell, I cant believe yours has exactly the same problem but here goes anyway after you have checked the things that Dave K has checked which are much easier.
The pipethat comes from the filler to the tank (thats about 2 " diameter and about 3" long) must have been replaced by some moron on mine, as they had sliced down one side and "wrapped" it round the tank filler neck so was not sealed so every time you filled up some went in the boot (trunk).
The only way round this was to take the tank out to replace that rubber link pipe from the tank to the filler cap - it cant be done any other way. allow plenty of time for this - at least a couple of hours and you need to be a bit of a contortionist.
You have to start by taking boot lock mechanism out, the bracket at the front of the petrol tank to the body (4 nuts up the back of the diff cradle). Then take the two bolts out at the laft hand of the tank (as you look at it - one at the front and one at the rear. Undo the large rubber filler pipe jubilees and slide the pipe down onto the tank neck, then leftt the rh (as you look at the tank) up slightly and move the tank to the right to extract - fitting is reverse of removal obviously. Only advise I would give is make sure that the pipe that the filler rubber goes onto is clean and use some petroleum jelly so it will slide up freely when reassembling - saves the knuckles. Put this pipe on loosely before bolting in the tank.
Note, if you take that out then consider replacing the other drain pipes in that area, one from the boot rubber channel that goes to the boot floor, and one that goes from the filler cap box enclosure to the same point on the boot floor.
As for breathers, there are 3 on my car, 2 go to some form of carbon canister on the LH rear wheel arch and one goes back to a carbon canister mounted near the battery at the front - there has to be a breather somewhere.
Good luck
