S2 FUEL TANK

Postby CDUNN » Mon Jan 15, 2018 9:37 am

Hi everyone
I would appreciate some views on the condition of the fuel tank fitted to my 1968 S2 FHC

Having noticed some very fine red-brown silt in the engine bay fuel filter bowl and the carburettor float chamber bowls, I decided to drain the tank and inspect it internally. In the bottom of the brass sump I found about a teaspoon of compacted red-brown silt. Upon removing the cover plate I was quite surprised to find after 50 years that the tank internal surfaces were in such good condition. There was no sludge or heavy corrosion evident. Around the sump hole the galvanizing had been penetrated and areas of light rust were apparent. I assume that corrosion is most likely in this area of the base of the tank as it is where moisture might collect as it is the lowest point. I have wiped out the areas of the tank that are accessible through the cover plate aperture and satisfied that the loose surface corrosion has been removed.

What do folks think ? Carry on or new tank ?

All corrosion really needs to be removed inside the tank. It never improves if ignored. I appreciate getting that corrosion out and removed is not so easy, but there are ways to have technology give you a helping hand.

Take a look at these and other videos and see how others have tacked the problem.

Alternatively you might put the tank out to a traditional local radiator/tank restoration company.

Hope that helps.

Hello Cdunn,

poersonally I would not worry about such light corrosion. I'd box it up and continue using it.
Your choice.
