Tachometer problem

I have a 1966, Series 1 fhc and the tacho is currently playing up. When I start the car up from cold the tacho seems to work, but if I rev the engine up to 1500 rpm the needle drops down to zero and then does not work at all for the rest of the journey. Any ideas as to whether it is the tacho or the camshaft generator?

I think that a check of the generator's drive dog might be the first check?

Tacho problems whether failing to work at all, or zinging about all over the dial seem a common problem.

I once asked Ken Jenkins for an opinion when mine was doing similar to yours and his answer was you could spend a lot of money chasing the problem and not solve it - but worth checking the generator drive as Alec suggests.
