Series 1 Wiper Motor Wiring and Testing

Postby selminer » Thu Jun 23, 2016 3:21 pm

Does anybody have the circuit for the operation of the wiper motor and switch in the 3 modes of operation? I cannot get mine running and wonder if the switch and/or motor can be tested separately.

Many thanks in anticipation but thanks for just reading it.

Hi Peter
I took these wiring notes when replacing the brushes on my own 1967 S1 car. However, before you start stripping the motor, check that the connections through the 5-way connector and the separate single connector to earth are good and clean as oxidation on the bullet ends can stop continuity, and that the earth point to the chassis s clean. If these are ok, suspect the motor brushes need replacing and the commutator needs cleaning, which involves removing the motor assembly. If new brushes don't work, its a service exchange wiper motor.
Good luck and let me know how you get on

Art.

Motor switch pos 1 is Y (yellow), which goes to 5-way connector, then YLG (yelow light green cable from 5-way and connects to the front resistor terminal inside the motor housing, which is hard wired to the field coil.

Motor switch pos 2 in N (brown) goes to NLG(brown light green) on 5-way, then to the left rear connection of the field coil.
Motor switch pos 3 is R (red) to the 5-way. Then RLG (red light green) to motor brush terminal.
There is also a RLG link wirecoming off the brush terminal which connects to a single bullet connector and from thre via a B (black)wire to earth.

Motor switch pos 4 is U (blue) to 5-way, then ULG ( blue light green) which goes to the other motor brush terminal.. A second ULG wire comes off the brush terminal and goes to the wiper park switch. at some point in this line the ULG wire conects through a bullet connector (behind the dash) to a RLG wire attached to the wiper parking switch. The parking switch has a B earth wire which earths at the bulkhead

Motor switch pos 5 is a W (white) cable which goes to the 5-way and connects to a WLG (white light green) cable which connects to the field coil terminal on the right side.

Motor switch pos 6 is a G (green) cable which is the power in feed from Fuse No. 7

Thanks Art for your reply I shall keep the information on file.

Yes I did sort the problem out, a friend helped me with the wiring and the wiper motor worked.
I did still have one problem in that the wipers were still parking for a left hand drive car and after trying all the suggestions on the forum like turning the wiper motor crank around they still were LHD.
Finally I re-soldered the wires in the motor after swopping them around and they now work correctly. Sorry the detail is lacking but it seems like a long time ago now.
I do remember the complicated parking aspect of the motor going in reverse to kick the slotted linkage to the far end so that little bit of extra motion put the wipers on the glass rubber.

Thanks again Peter
