S1 Hard Tops

Postby bernie1806 » Wed Apr 22, 2009 8:17 pm

As a relative 'new comer' to the club this is possibly a naive question...

But can a factory hard top be fitted to a standard roadster?

If so, is there a conversion of any sort required, additional brackets, etc?

My car is a 1966 4.2 S1 roadster.

Hi
Hardtops can be retro fitted. They are fixed by the same style of clamps at the front, 3, and just behind the B Post by 2 triangular brackets. The brackets can be bought from the usual suppliers, Robey's etc about £100 a pair, or look out for them on e bay if the hardtop doesn't come with them. They also have 2 special bolts for location again available new.

I borrowed an original bracket and made a pair out of stainless for my lightweight replica, they are handed.

In terms of Hardtops if you are buying secondhand it might be worth trying a fit before parting with cash as it isn't uncommon for a hardtop to be trimmed to a particular car. This is normally restricted to the "humps" of the rear wings. It isn't the end of the world if it doesn't fit as they can be fibreglassed back to meet your cars shape if need be. By and large the hardtop to shell seal normally accommodates differences.

If you are buying a repro top, a large southern supplier charges some £700 for a hardtop that he gets from Honeybourne mouldings. Honeybourne will sell direct the exact same thing to you for £300 although the front attachments are different on this repro top, not being clamps but J hooks.
Good luck
Pat

Bernie,

There is a well known supplier selling these fairly cheap please don't buy they are not good if you can't guess who they are PM me and I'll tell you off list.
I don't know about Honeybourne never heard of them but Pat knows what he's talking about so I would take his advice.

Dave
