Hi folks,
I am new to the club and the foram. I have just started to restore a series 3 , 1971 etype V12. the car is totally stripped now and have found a few problems with the body work ( as I thought I would ). The bonnet, although looked good before stripping has thrown up some nasties, obviously had a shunt and been repaired.
My questions are? is it worth finding a second hand bonnet? if yes, then does it have to be a series 3 bonnet? is it better spending big bucks and buy new?
I now the bonnet is the car and has to be perfect but any help would be appriecated

Pete,
The bonnet on a S3 is different to all the other bonnets mainly i think because of the flared arches but because you have the V12 engine there may be other differences as well.
Have a look for a second hand bonnet by all means but then you have to ask why are they selling it? probably because its like the one you have already.
You may be able to use the good parts off a second bonnet to repair your old one. Bonnets come up on ebay now and again.

Pete,
New bonnets come about 1" too long and then they have to be cut to length. This means there is a risk a second hand bonnet will be too short. If this occurs it will need to be extended, not the most difficult E-type bodywork job. Getting a bonnet to fit the car is about a day's work if all that is needed is getting the height, left/right and fore/aft adjustment right. If for any reason one side is too tall, then it gets difficult. It all depends who has been there before and whether he/she had the skill and care to do a proper job. In the case of a UK car you can be almost certain someone has done work at some time. For the reasons given I would suggest repairing your existing bonnet unless it is very bad. Simply taking the bonnet apart totally changes the fit.
