Hi
I am in the process of rebuilding the rear suspension/axle on my S1 3.8 and am considering dumping the weedy Dunlop brakes in favour of something more effective.
I have considered Derek Watson's conversion but this seems to be rather expensive. Does anybody have any good alternatives? I'm not adverse to a bit of engineering work but would prefer to follow a tired and tested route.
Also any thoughts on front brakes would be appreciated.
Thanks
Stuart

Stuart,
The only option now for the rear brakes is Zeus since Coopercraft is no longer trading. There is a company called J&L spares who relined my rear brake cylinder and did a very good job of them, they also did my brake master cylinders and wiper motor.
As for the front I did a write up on the Volvo 4 pot conversion. You get some front brakes from a Volvo 240 '84 to 87 which are the non vented type and they fit directly to the E-Type uprights as they are both 3" centres. There is a little 'engineering work to do but they should work out at around £150 and that is if you do a service exchange on the brake calipers.
If you want the write up which tells all and includes photos PM me.
I have had this set up on my 3.8 for 4 years now and when matched with greenstuff pads front and rear they actually stop the car and WILL lock the brakes up even with a Kelsey Hayes bellows.
Don't listen to anyone who tells you to put the original front brakes onto the rear. The Volvo set up has the same volume as the original brakes but the pad area is larger so better braking by putting the old front brakes on the rear you will move the brake bias from approx 60% front and 40% rear to around 50/50 and under heavy braking the car could spin.
Remember the front brakes stop the car and rear brakes keep the car in a straight line. This brake mod has been used on no end of 3.8 and 4.2 E-Types with great success.

Rear Brakes
I've just rebuilt the rear brakes, blead the rears and found the pedal went about half way down, one pump of the pedal and it was up to the top
Replace the pads and now the pedal is right at the top The old pads were only about half worn
Any thoughts ?
