Hello - I have a 1971 E Type V12 which having drivien this weekend after storing since September I noticed that the transmission was slipping a bit in 2nd. The fluid does smell a bit burnt and blackened.I am taking to a Transmission specialist next week but I am keen to know what the options are.
If the box has to come out can this be done without taking the whole engine and gearbox?
If it does come out is it worth looking at an alternative replacement box say a 4 speed?
If it has to be repaired or rebuilt what would be a fare cost in worst case.

Auto Transmission problem

Any work to the gearbox or clutch means the engine must come out as a complete unit the Haynes manual explains how to do it. I have found it best to drop the engine onto a bogey then lift the car up at the front and roll the engine out.
Most owners with auto boxes change for a manual 5 speed box the price for one of these is around £2000 to £3000. There are a few options you can try. www.etypefabs.com have just started to manufacture a bespoke box for the E-Type of all series.
Don't know how much a recon box would be I be sorry.
